View Full Version : Power supply for Duratrax Ice
I need to get a power supply for my new Duratrax Ice charger and I am a bit confused about what to get. I am just going to run the charger off a 12v car battery but I don't know a lot about electronics and I was hoping someone could help me to select the right one. I went into my local automotive store and they have a huge range of 12v batteries but they were all different sizes and although they were all 12v the amps on the batteries differed greatly. Is there a particular amp I should look out for when selecting a battery? Please excuse my ignorance, I am still new to this hobby.

Buying a car battery is pointless.. Just buy a cheap powersupply from towerhobbies or somthing. I bought a cheap one for $40.00 bucks for my charger and it works great.
If you buy a real car charger and try to conect it to your R/C charger. you will screw it up! A car charger are designed to charger wet cell battery only!
Thanks for the advise but because I live in Australia I can't use a power supply like the one you have suggested. Our AC output voltage here is 240v which makes it impossible to find an rc specific power supply that will work. I have no choice but to get a car battery.

Well you can buy a power supply over in australia, or you could just buy a power supply from towerhobbies, and then get one of those adapters for when you travel, and you will be good to go.

Do you guys have radioshacks down there? If so, go into one, and get their 15 amp power supply. I bought one for 75 USD and it works perfect.
We have Tandy Electronics which is the same sort of thing I think. I will go and have a look, thanks for your help.

There should be many 240 volts power supplies that go to 12 volts dc. I have at least 2 of them that can be changed from 110 to 220.

My Pro-Peak 20a 13.8v supply runs off UK mains fine (240v). It also only cost me £35, and only costs about US$60, so personally I would recommend this.

It seems like a 60 watt ps and the ice is a 120 watt charger so it may allow you to use abouit half power. I think one can do better really.

I hace gotten a radio shacck 15amp PS for my Ice charger. I does a great job and its not really biig either so easy to transport. If my calc is right this should be 180 watts
(12volts x 15apms = 180 watts) I have been able to break in motors, run my comm lathe and charge at any apms using this amps.
