well i emailed customer service and asked them what pinion spur gear i should use on my TB-02 with a tamiya super modified 11T motor. And how long this motor will last before brushes/comms are required to be done.

and they came up with this, how the hell u gonna fit a 96spur on a TB-02 i think this is just crazy. someone correct me if im wrong. And are they serious that the brushes will only last 3-10 runs and then a comm cut is due in that period ???

this is what they had to say...

Dear Tamiya Customer,

For the gearing, I would start with a 34/96 combination and go up or down
from there. As for this 11 turn motor, we have no experience with this motor
because it was not imported to the U.S. market. As with any high performance
motor, you should change brushed every 3 to 10 runs, depending on brush
ware, the comm should be cut every time you change brushes as well.

Modified Motors go through brushes very, very fast. Depending how you drive and for how long, that might not be that far off. Also, they might be talking about racing. When you race, I see people cut their comms and get new brushes after a few runs.

Tamiya may be reccomending a finer pitch gear also then what you are used to. A 96T spur in 64 pitch is a small to medium sized gear. As for the brush runs and com cutting times...That is typical of racing conditions where everything must be kept in top shape and be consistant from run to run. For bashing purposes performance is not so critical so maintenance does not have to be so extreme.

Right, even with Tamiya's metric gears, they do have one that's equivalent to 64 pitch in gear teeth size, so I could see a 96 tooth spur fitting that way. And as for motors, yes, an 11 turn motor WILL see a LOT of commutator wear over the course of 3-10 runs(much more as you get closer to 10 runs between rebuilds). The fewer turns in the motor(& therefore the more powerful it is), the faster everything wears, & as the comm begins to wear, its surface also becomes uneven, which make s the brushes bounce & that in turn increases comm wear, the longer you let it go, the worse it gets....

sorry to be offtopic, but after that last post, I'm glad I'm moving to brushless :D

All funniness aside, their motor wear recommedations sound fair to me.

Not all motors need a Comm cutting after 3-5 Runs. I`ve used(run) a Reedy 13x2 Ti Worlds Edition Motor and I didn`t cut the Comm until after 11 - Runs.....(I was Racing). The Comm just didn`t get hurt too fast.....(same with the Brushes).

But to end all of the Brush - Comm mess; going Brushless is a GOOD Idea.....Ha Ha!
-I might Go Brushless this year.

Take Care.

Well if you buy $3.00 copper brushes it should last 5 runs or so.
But if your like me, buy the $20.00 Pure silver brushes they should last you 20+ runs. I get that much on my 8 and 9 turn motors. Also I switch between 13oz and 11oz brush springs.

My two cents.
