I got my son a Traxxas Stampede for Christmas. Suddenly it will not go in reverse. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be or how to go about researching the problem. We are new to RC and really have no idea where the problem could be.

is it a mechanical speed control or a electric speed control? Check the throttle trim, he might have turned it so that the control is moved more toward the forward setting and not enough to reverse. Though if it was a mechanical speed control and the trim was all the way forward, I would thing it would roll forward on its on.

I am not sure if it is mechanical or electric. The controller has two knobs one for the steering and one for throttle. When I turn it to the right it will eventually begin rolling forward on its own. I can turn it all the way to the left and it will still not go backwards. I do not hear anything when you try to go backwards so I assume that there are no worn out mechanical parts.

One more bit of information. I noticed that there is a red light that is on under a blue part on the truck when the controller is on. When I move the throttle forward the light turn green when the truck starts forward. But when I take the throttle backwards the light does not change.

Yes, you have the ESC version. When you give it forward throttle, the light should turn green... when you give it reverse throttle (backwards) the light should turn red.
When you turn the car on, does it move without giving it throttle?

I used to have a Pede that did the same thing with the stock ESC and. I think the ESC just quit going into reverse that is all I could come up with. I changed my ESC out and it worked perfect wit the new ESC.

Have you tried to reset the esc? Im not sure if they have a one-touch type of setting like the Novaks but try that before you send that one back to traxxas.
I doubt traxxas will have a problem getting you a new one if it comes down to it.

For some reason I have a feeling the FETs responsible for reverse just sorta gave up and went poof. Does it happen to smell like that electrical burning type smell at all? The ESC the RTR versions comes with isn't all that reliable from what I've heard. Personally, I got a Rusty with the MSC, and then just replaced that with an ss5800 instead (didn't even get a chance to run it with the stock motor/MSC lol!). You probably should look into a new ESC if traxxas won't get you a new one under warranty.

I had the reverse FET's go out on my old Dually ESC in about two weeks. Even though I was running it on a stock motor CharlieS said stock motors often pull more juice than their modified counterparts. Since it was under warranty I was a happy camper and they had a new item at my door in a few days after I sent my old unit in. Hope traxxas does the same.

I think so too, the reverse is burnt out. Esc is at fault. There are many replacements that will be compatible if you need reverse.
