View Full Version : What brushes for a Reedy KR?

I've decided to try something new. Until now I've only used Orion Revolutions. This motor is for my Stadium Truck (MF2) and is a 12 double. I have some quick questions for this new motor:
-What brushes should I use? Springs?
-I cut the comm every 5-7 times; should I do this more often?
-Should I replace the brushes every time I cut the comm?
Any tips or tricks about the Reedy's? My brother has a TI in his XXX-4; but has mostly runs his nitro's now. Thanks for your help.

The KR uses the laydown version of brushes, 760, 766, 767 or 769 hollow which is the same compound as the 767. 767 produces the most power, but also more comm wear, while the 766 is a middle of the road brush. The Reedy springs should be okay if you are using the stock timing, but may help adding a little more tension (bending spring so it provides more tension) on the positive side. You will diefinitely see consistant performance by performing a skim cut after each run, the cleaner you can keep the comm surface the better it will conduct current. You could use a comm stick to remove some of the tarnish from the comm and brush - doing so after each use and waiting to turn comm between 3-5 runs but usually you will notice a big drop in performance right after the second to third run. Also truing the comm more frequently - you remove less material - it may require just one pass to get a smooth, true surface. If brushes aren't worn just do a quick breakin so the brush reseats to new comm surface a 30 second breakin may suffice. Normally with modified 13 turns and below I use the Trinity springs Purple on positive, Red on Negative to two Purples increasing the tension on postive side. Use just enough spring tension to reduce arcing and reduce brush bounce. Some racers with use a higher silver brush on positive 767, and a lower silver brush on negative side either the 766 or 760. Plus another method is to purchase an additional replacement armature (Fantom makes replacement armatures for the Reedy line of motors) so you can have a fresh comm - just in case you don't have time to cut and true the one already in motor. Should have some experience rebuilding mod motors though and that's the route I go with most of the motors I use (stock, 19turn, mod) purchase a replacement armature or two so in the event I don't have time to turn the one already in motor I swap it for the replacement armature.
