yes, i have looked at other posts before i posted this.... I have a rustler w/ a 17t speed gems motor, traxxas X-L1 ESC and, 1800 and 1500 batts. Yes, the wires are the same gauge. i have tried different gearing (running the stock gearing now)When i had my stock 20t it did the same thing.I have no air scoops in the body, but i normally run w/o the body. It still overheats... :(

For the 17 turn motor, go down a few teeth (at least 2) on the pinion.

the motor limit is 17t and i have had it for about 7 months.for the last motnth or 2 it has gotten hot enough to burn me, but only on one side. i have tried higher pinion gears but not lower spur gears... i will try that

Are you using the original connectors on it? If so, that in combination with the 17 turn motor & tall gearing would produce LOTS of heat...... :)

i'd say that's all the more reason to suspect your plugs. Especially since its a Traxxas ESC, which isn't the most efficient in the world to begin with. They also crimp on their connectors, no soldering, which is not good for low resistance, & the more resistance you have, the more heat your system generates(but it doesn't have to heat your motor up). In the short term, I think it would do you a lot of good to solder on some quality connectors, like Deans Ultra plugs or the Powerpoles(many companies sell those, from Lightspeed to Duratrax, Tower, Anderson, Sermos, Racers edge, etc.). Those have resistance as low or lower than the wire they go on, so they're just as good as hardwiring(that's directly soldering every connection), I'll bet that will go a long way to allowing your electrics to run cooler. In the long run, you might want to step up to a better ESC, there are many excellent ones out there, with very low resistance, & power handling capacity that can deal with serious modified motors should you want to try them in the future..... :)

thank-you. i now have a new problem. now my esc will not go in reverse. the red light is on that says its going in reverse but it doesnt. and on low batts, it just keeps going with no control......i think i will get a new esc.

grizzbob, which connectors do u mean? the ones to the motor or the connectors to the batts? what do u think about the duratrax streak esc?

I don't think the Streak can handle a 17T( i could be wrong). I personally would recommend Novak or LRP, or even a Tekin(if you can find them). They all make quality reversing ESCs that won't bust your wallet too much. If you invest in a little better ESC, it'll be worth it in the long run.
Also, no matter what you get, replace the plugs right away. Those cheap plastic type are a waste. Deans Ultra Plugs.

I meant all of the plugs, if you even have one bad pair of them in your system, then it'll still have a lot of resistance. As for ESC's, I'm really not sure about those Duratrax ones, not many people use them in my neck of the woods, so I can't really judge them. However, I do believe in the saying, "you get what you pay for". it's just my opinion, but I'm definitely a devotee of Novak's products, I've used their ESC's for over 10 years, & I've never had a problem with one. I'm sure you can find one for not too much more than the Duratrax, & I know you can count on a Novak to last..... :)

Novak also seems to have the best service. I broke my Cyclone (totally my fault, any ESC would have broken) and they fixed it and returned it in a couple of days for a good price. I have heard from others that their service is good. Of course, i haven't heard a thing about LRP's service. Maybe their stuff is more reliable? nah, Novak is just mroe popular, i think.

Actually the streak can handle a motor down to a 15 turn but it doesn't have reverse anyways i thought he was talking about an XL-1?
