I have an xray M18 with a Mamba 8000 motor and I am looking at getting a lipo battery for it. I was told that with a three cell lipo, the car would actually be too fast and would be uncontrollable, and that I should stick with a 2 cell lipo.
I don't race, just bash, and right now I am not very happy with the performance of this car using NiMh 2/3 A cells.

Any body out there have this setup, that can give some advice. Thanks

Well, I have no experience with 1/18 cars but I am learning alot about lipo and have raced with lipo for the past 6 months. I would look at the Kokam lipos or the Polyquest "twenty" lipos at www.hobby-lobby.com. Search "twenty or Kokam". These are 20C packs and should handle the current draw of the 8000kv mamba. I don't no what kind of current the little motors draw though so I don't know which size pack you should get or what would fit.

I don't know how many rpm the micro motors can handle but with 3S 11.1v, your looking at 88000 rpm, sounds a bit much so you may have to stick with 2S.

Thanks scoob, I checked them out at hobby lobby. Then I started looking at their Helicopters. :o I really want one of those.
I will have to do some more research, but maybe if I decide to make the investment in Lipos, I can justify it by using them in my new Helo as well. :D

Consider also that with two lipo cells your already getting more that with your NIMH packs (7.4v instead of 7.2) you'll have more voltage than you do now with just 2 cells. I think three might be a little over kill.

With 3s Li-po the mamba will pull a mini to go around 60 mph. I know this from http://beatyourtruck.com/projects.html It's the rocket Mini-T project. The only thing that might get broken is the drivetrain, but the motor can handle it. It is true that the car will be too fast but it would still be cool to have a 3s lipo just to mess around with. The lipo they use is an apogee, and you can buy them at tower.

P.S. look at the video in part 6 at the end it's wicked.

Thats what I'm talkin ABOUT , Aqualato1 I want to see if I can get this little nine inch car to hit 70 miles an hour.

I have to admit though that I ran the car today with a cheap used 5 cell Nimh, and at times the car was already a little squirelyyyyyyy !!!!!! I would guestamate that I must have hit 40 plus today.
I will have to find a smoother, cleaner place to run it. Lots of rocks and stuff today.
After I ran it, I walked around and picked up a 3/8 inch nut, like off of a regular car, And started wondering what it would be like, to hit that thing in a regular car if the nut was 1/18 scale as I found it, and grew to 1/1 scale to match the car. I figure it would be like hitting a rock about half the size of one of the wheels, going 70 miles an hour !!!

Any way, I ordered a helicopter to day, that will include 2 Lipo 11.1 v cells and a charger. I know this is cheap stuff, but so was the price.
I dont know what size they are yet, so I'm not sure how they will fit. but I plan on powering up that Mamba 8000 with one of them thar hot diggity Lipos pretty soon, even if I have to duct tape it to the roof or pull it with a trailer. :D

MERRY CHRISTMASS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO ALL !!!!!!!!

Junst kinda of curious what kind of 2/3A's are you using? Are they good cells or just made in china no name junk cells?

The ones I have been using are two used packs ( junk ) that I bought off Fee-Bay.
One of which seems to be no good at all. I have charged it, and run it twice and both times the car only had about 60% of the power as it does with the other pack.

When I bought these packs, they were 6 cells in a side by side configuration, and I could not make them fit in the car. So I removed one cell from each pack. Now I am going to try to reconfigure the pack that still works back into a 6 cell stick pack, and see if it will fit in the car.

I just ordered a Brand New Integy 1200 Nimh 6 cell 2/3 A stick pack. It will be interesting to see the difference with this pack. And then with the Lipos. :D

What kind of cells are in the integy pack? If it doesn't specify GP 1100's or other good brand I bet it will be no better than the Junk packs made with no name cells. the problem with no name cell packs is the cells are usually jsut RX pakc cells that can't handle the loads Mod motors and High powered BL's pull.

My Mistake, They are actually Intellect 1200's . Are these any good ?

They sound good.

Here's a link to a website with a bunch of Batteries http://maxamps.com/index.html?lmd=38701.874433

A lipo to be looking at is the 3s 1000 mah for ~60 mph and ~48 mph on the 2s. (all assuming your using the mamba 8000)

In the Mini-T project they were using 3s 830 mah.

ohh yeah.. IB 1200's are good. I got the same cells in my RC18t. It should be pretty silly with the 1200's and even better with the 2 cell LiPo's with great runtimes.

The Lipos that are supposed to come with a Helicopter ( on order ) are 3s, I am hoping that if they are getting a mini truck to go 60 MPH, then a touring car should be able to do better than that. :D
