I didn't have a clue when I bought mine. I went with a reputable manufacturer so replacement parts would be easier to find. I asked the paint section at Home Depot for advice. I asked a couple of the folks there for multiple opinions and went with the best one. The one I bought was certainly not the cheapest, but I don't put a price on my lungs.

:D 3M ;) just make sure your filters are designed for the paint medium you're spraying to give you the best protection. Mine went for a bit above 40 bucks.

I am using one that ran about the same price, the filters are like 12 bucks to replace.
Helpful hint when not in use keep it in a ziplock bag to preserve your filter life. I use the heavy duty freezer bags

Ok, finally i can help someone!
There are two types of respiratior out there, one for paint particles (sp) and the other is for Fumes........
The one for small paint particles just has cotton like filters.......
The one for fumes has cotton and charcoal filters which the charcoal absorb the fumes...
The one you need to get is for fumes......like piggy said you can get it at home depot in the paint section. It's made by 3M for 27.00 and you will have to replace the filters when you start smelling fumes.... and they run 17.00 at home depot.

I paint real cars for a living so i know a few things about this .. goofy is right .. but one thing that he didn't mention is with paints is the eye factor .. masks help save your lungs but with the paints and laquers get in your eyes and skin causing alot more damage then your lungs... wearing gloves and a full face mask is the only way to go to keep yourself safe..
I use the one in the top left hand corner....
