View Full Version : An idea...glueless rims.

One thing a hate is gluing of tires. It seems like it would be easy to come up with some glueless rims. Maybe a rim with pins coming out of the rim that stick firmly into the bead of the tire or some sort of clamp system. This would make changing tires a 5 min ordeal. As it is now I have to have several sets of tires mounted and ready for a race day and my foams wear out before my tires so I have to bake, acetone them, replace foam and mount them agian. It just seems stupid that we still glue tires when there is so much technology in RC these days.

I can't believe a company han't come up with this yet. Or maybe someone has and I'm unaware? I wish I had the means to develop something and patent it :D

they did in the past, it was called "three peice rims"

Did they not work well?

Maybe I'm the only one who hates messing with the glue...lol

Here they are...I think they are noticably heavier than a 1pc wheel.

Cool, thanks I'll look into them.

I totally agree that a nice light glueless tire/rim combo would be a welcomed addition to our expanding hobby and all its recent technology breakthroughs. The key design features should be ability for disassembly (for the reasons you mentioned) and lightweight (for performance).

The Associated 3-piece rims was a concept along those lines. Good concept, poor design IMO. The tires could relatively easily pull right off the rim.

Beadlocks are good, but very heavy and only available in monster truck that I know of.

Thanks Grant, You got pics too. The weight factor os something I hadn't thought of. As of now, I guess it's just one of those things you have to do the hard way for best performance.

This same topic came up before so I had the pictures all lined up already. :)

somewhere in the forums of this site ive seen a link to a site that does infact have beadlock rims for 2.2 truck tires or for stadium trucks if you will. its an awsome concept but a true racer would know that they weigh more and racing is all about being light not about how easy it is to get tires off the rims and i mean i have no problem with gluing tires to rims. when the tire wears out or whatever just heat the oven to 350 degrees and pop the rims and tires in for about 15 minutes and the wheels come right off.....

yeah i saw that link too, the rims were aluminum and were $109 for 4.

Why is it assumed that a glueless tire set HAS to be heavy?

Other things that were assumed until breakthroughs proved otherwise:
- a cel phone could never fit in a pants pocket.
- A monster truck will never be as durable as buggies and stadium trucks.
- a backflip is impossible
- An RTR company could never produce a successful racing vehicle.

In hindsight, those are very narrow minded point of views IMO..... not trying to argue. I'm just saying. :) one of these days I hope to add to that list:

- A 1 piece rim will always have a lower rotational inertia than a glueless rim. :)

And on a side note, if you want to do backflips, heavier tires and rims would have a greater influence on the pitch of the vehicle in the air. In other words, it would be easier to do backflips.
