Futaba 75Mhz FM with a failsafe. Beyond that its personal prefrence.
If you want absolute top of the line, get a nomadio sensor radio

Jez,
Not knowing whats available 'down under', I'd just say to select a fairly 'common' name brand radio that fits your budget. Having more channels than you really need is 'nice', but certainly not necessary. Not knowing what frequencies are used in AU, I would sort of aim toward the higher ones (75 Mhz?). Usually means more channels are available so more people can play at the same time. FM mode is slightly less susceptible to interference than AM, so ju$t depending, that'$ what I'd look for. Sort of a "what looks and feels good" thing. Keeping it on top of the water and off the rocks is more an operator ability than the radio's (but the radio is nice to blame it on anyway!!)...
Have fun.

thanks doc
its a tough call coz its the lifeline to a lot of hard work and with so many brands on the market its hard to deceide on whats good and not,i will need to spend some bucks on a 1/4 scale servo and a failsafe so you have to keep things in perspective
do you know of any brands to stay away from which would be an easier question

Jez,
I'm going to be of even less help than before, cuz' I honestly can't say what to stay away from. Same reason mostly, just don't know what's there, even less experience with it. As far as 'eBay' is concerned, I'd sell things there, but I'd never buy things there! That's just from personal (bad) experience, not being too smart, and because I'm very pessimistic... also chicken! And to be fair, the deal you found is probably a good one...
