This might be a dumb question, but is it possible to change armatures on a motor to a different wind? I have a Team Checkpoint 12x2 motor and want to get an 8x1 or 9x1. Tower Hobbies sells the armatures by themselves. I was wondering if I could swap them out without buying a new motor and everything would work.

Yes you can.Plus a lot of motors regardless of who makes'um you can swap parts to and fro.(some nitro motors too)

If you race under some type of organzation the motor must use OEM parts from the same brand plus some parts are keyed so it may only fit one style of motor so all parts must be TOP based for the Orion/Peak brand motors. For replacement armatures try Stormer Hobbies and select the Fantom wound armatures - good winding and normally cheaper that the Orion replacements.
Normal you want to tune motor's power to suit track conditions while still maintaining sufficient runtime. Myself and other experienced racers will sometimes purchase 2-4 complete motors say all in double winds but in 7-11 turn ranges then replacement armatures in single or triple winds to fine tune motor's power to better suit track with out overpower it and obtaining good performance and runtime.
But try using as many tuning options as possible: if runtime is good, try increasing the timing in 2 degree increments - at roughly 5degrees you should drop a tooth on the pinion to counter the change in motor's power. The only thing you will notice differently with going to a lower turn is the acceleration will be quicker (power develops quicker but overal speed will remain relatively the same as it did with the 12 turn double) plus runtime will decrease more with each turn you eliminate.

If bashing the rules regardling motor parts don't apply, you can do anything you want or use any part. Probably don't go below a 10turn single, nine turns and less will create more wear and stock motor setup is not always correct. Many racers need to replace the spring tensions with one that provides more tension - without being too heavy.
