A Friend gave me a Losi XX buggy so i could get into the R/C hobby. I already bought a Hitec Lynx radio set, he gave me a 14oo battery pack, two motors, and a Dynamite Mega 1 charger. As far as I know the only thing i need now is a speed control, I don't have much money at the moment so what I need to know is how to identify the motors, hopefully one is stock so i can use a cheap ESC, otherwise I will have to wait a while to get a better ESC (been looking at a Spark for the cheap one and a Novak Explorer II for a better one)

What do the motors look like? Do they have a brand name on them such as Trinity?

It should say somewhere on the can how many turns and such. A 27turn is popular as a stock motor, anything lower is considered a modified motor, mild or wild.
Depending on the motor turn, you can buy a pretty cheap ESC, Dynamite Power Pulse(stock-13t), Duratrax Streak, or that really cool pink one from Futaba(2 models #230,stock-#330,13t). All of these ESC are around $25 - $40.

The motor i installed (which already had a Deans connector on it) says Maxtec Development and the other says Dirtinator 2 and 96 on the screw end and EPIC on the contact end.

Man you got me there? You have two options in this case, ask your friend to see if he can remember what turn they are, or you can take them apart and it should be on the armature or the magnets.
I'm thinking that maybe the Dirtanator is a stock motor, along with the other one.
This is just a speculation, you won't know until you find out.

get the explorer esc anyway, it's just a little more expensive than some stock motor esc's. So if you have or ever plan on useing a mod motor you will probably be able to do it. But wait until your sure about the motor because it might be a low turn motor (but i doubt it).

The Dirtanator 2 (D2) is a modified. It says Trinity on it too right?

Check for bearings or bushings where the motor shaft comes out. If they are a bronze color then the motor is stock and can be used with a cheaper ESC. It appears that both motors are modifieds which means they may be a little too hot to handle for a Spark (Spike?). So, an Explorer II would be a better choice. Or you could by a cheap ESC and a stock motor for about the same price.

Novak RACER EX. No motor limit, HyperFET's, low resistance, torque control, 12ga. wire, runs super cool. Can buy used for $40.00 to $50.00 or new for $80.
P2k Stock motor is good and rebuildable.

Like I said, I already bought the Explorer II. And I can't have reverse if i want to race around here. I haven't seen the Racer one anywhere

scout, the explorer II should work well for these motors. your best option on soldering would be to go to a hobby shop and ask a sales or tech person. they can show you where to solder the connectors and resistors so you dont hurt your esc. taking them to the track you plan to race at may also be a good idea since you will get to interact with the racers before you begin.
