check out this from an atricle about an electric drag racer in the Chicago Tribune

"You’re staring at 56 Hawker Genesis 12-volt batteries linked in sequence to deliver 1,800 amps of instantaneous mayhem when Klein buries the accelerator pedal for the quarter-mile.
“We carry one megawatt onboard this rail,” Zak said, “enough power to light a small town, if you agree that 50,000 or so 60-watt light bulbs are enough to illuminate Wasco.”
West suburban Wasco indeed.
Take another snoop around this evil contraption.
Battery juice flows through a beefed-up controller unit into a pair of NetGain Warp-11 electric motors (modified forklift units) that produce the equivalent of 320 horsepower each.
“The motors are hooked together with an in-line coupler,” said Zak. “When Karl jumps on it, he has 1,600 pounds of torque hitting the pavement at near zero r.p.m."
