Motor: P2K
Pinion: Check your manual and use the suggested one (it'll be somewhere in the 20-25 tooth range)
Speed Control: Novak Explorer II (there are dozens of options in this category, but I've had good success with this one. Also, Novak is known for their quality product and tech support).
Batteries: Duratrax stick packs (your choice, either 1500, 1700, 2000, or 2400 mAH, depending on how much you want to spend)
Charger: Duratrax Piranha (don't skimp and get a timed charger; this one is inexpensive and will keep your packs filled to the brim).

Also, you'll need a radio. Look for one in the $50-100 range. The Airtronics Blazer is a good choice, as is the one from Hitec. If you want to spend a little more, go for the XR2 from JR ($99 price tag, but it is computerized).

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

The other two motors are ok, but I mentioned the P2K only because a lot of people love them. Besides, the motor is not going to make much of a difference for a beginner. Just buy any of the stock motors mentioned here, and then get out there and practice!

the P2k should be more forgiving about gearing, so it should be better for a beginner. improper gearing is a common problem for beginners, and the P2K will lessen the effect of a gearing problem.

And they are probably just as good as the others on average. I say this, but i run all MVPs. But it is a matter of preference.

I'd go w/ a MVP or a Green Machine 3. Look at the Pro versions, they are already dynoed. You can look at them to see what the specs of the motor (torque, effiency, RPM) unless you have a dyno I think it is worth it. They also have better brushes in them and they don't require a break in period.

Noobie is right, preference has a lot to do with it. However, it's a fact that the P2K is probably the easiest stock motor to start with. It has lots of torque, which is good for an offroad truck, & it puts out very good power. It's broad power band makes it much easier to gear correctly than any of the others, & even if you get it wrong, it should still hold up to the abuse(it's a pretty tough motor). The only thing it doesn't do so well is deliver a lot of top end(not as much as an MVP or Green Machine 3), & its torque does drop off at top end, which makes it more difficult to carry speed through high-speed corners(that's where the GM3 & MVP come into their own). For now, I'd recommend a P2K, until you get a good feel for the size & type of track you're running on, & get more experience in gearing it properly..... :)

take a look at the "p-2-k or MVP" thread....

some people have had decent luck with the mvp... some haven't... (i definately didn't... LOL)

i used a couple orion chrome stockers last season... for my personal racing, they did not work as well as the P-2-K... but i have seen several people that swear by them....

but at most local tracks... you will see tons of people running P-2-k's.... they just seem to work real good for the majority of people...

personally, i normally use a Trinity Green Machine 3 Pro with E-brushes and stock springs in my buggy (FT B-3)... and i run a Fantom Epic Stocker (P-2-K) with Reedy 767 brushes and purple springs in my truck (a FT T-3)...

but different people like different motors... start with one... and if you don't like it, think about switching to another brand... look around your local pit area and talk to the guys running up front at your track... and see just what they are using, not only for motors, but for brushes and springs as well...

peace out..... :)
