cant help ya there. never heard of that problem before... if it chargers the others,,, maybe theres a bad connector in the pack from the factory. (pre assmebled correct?) Thats the only thing i can think of a bad, loose, or not connecting at all connector in the pack. but before ripping the heat shrink off get some more opinions.

Since your asking if a dented cell is bad, I assume you have one... and have also found your problem :D

you can buy one separate cell for cheap at your lhs

You can use a five cell pack but will run into two problems:
1. Unless you have a charger with adjustable voltage, you may not be able to charge the pack.
2. Since there is one less cell, there will be less voltage and therefore less speed.
Do what bryceums suggested, but a new cell. They are fairly cheap. I know Integy sells single Sanyo 2400s for around $6.

could a dent in a cell make this happen?

like posted above.. it is most likely you just have one bad cells.... the other 5 are just fine.... (typically)
could a dented cell go bad?? yes indeed.... also, check for any cells that look like they may be leaking...
sounds like you are using pre-made stick packs... if you can return the pack, do it... that is highly unlikely... so you may want to cut off the shrink wrap to be able to more closely inspect each cell... and yes, you can buy more shrink wrap at your LHS later to re-do the pack...
peace out... :)
