How accurate are these "motor limits" on esc's and what is the difference. Can it really cost that much more to use somewhat better fets in an esc, I mean where the cost doubles. I have a novak rooster, not super, that is rated to I believe only 13 turns, and have run an 11 and 12 turn speed gems as well as a reedy sonic 2 12 double with no problems at all. :D

an ESC doesn't know if it has a 9 turn or a stocker attached... but it can only handle a certain amount of current before it overheats or simply blows up...
the "turn" ratings on an esc roughly equate to the amount of current a certain turn of motor will pull....
if you have a really slow 9 turn that is geared super low, a 17 turn rated esc may handle it...
but if you have a really hot running 19 turn geared to the moon, it may very well overheat a 17 turn rated esc...
but it's really best not to use a lower turn motor than your esc is rated for... you are just asking for trouble.... trust me, the esc people put their rating on there for a reason...

if the esc is overheating then thats not good, it might be handling them because of your gear ratio,

Howie's right, motor limits are essentially just a recommendation, but they're ones you should take seriously. To answer your other question, yes, the best FET's really do cost them that much more, they ususlly have to sort through very large numbers of them to find the very best, & I'll bet the best ones only make up a small number of each batch, so to get large numbers of good ones, they have to buy many more than that, so they charge more for the better ones to make up the cost.... :)
