I'm thinking of going into 1:12 scale electric racing. I watched a race the other day and I've owned r/c cars in the past and I'm hooked again. My question is what kit would you recommend to get started with? most of my racing will be done on carpet but i will do some on asphalt. also will a regular 27 turn electric stock motor meet stock requirements for 1:12 scale?

Hi, 1/12 scale racing isn't quite as popular as it was, but it has been picking up steam again. I own a CRC carpet knife 3.2r, and I say great things about it. For a 1/12 scale its easy to drive (they tend to require a lot more finese than their 1/10 4wd counterparts) and its also very easy to maintain (most 1/12's are). As far as suggestions for 1/12 kits go, (assuming you are talking about road cars and not oval racing) I would suggest the CRC carpet knife or T-force, the Corally SP12M, the AE RC12L4 or older L3. Trinity just release a new one, I think its called the black widow. I don't know anything about it, but if it is anything like their previous cars it is at least worth looking into. I know that yokomo also makes a 1/12 pan, but again I don't know much about it.
As far as your motor goes, what regulations does your club or local hobby shop state? Are your races ROAR sanctioned? Do they fallow roar rules? Most likely your motor will work, but you can check a list of approved motors and find a list of rules on the roar website. http://www.roarracing.com/

A 27T motor will work. For many, that is all that is needed. A 1/12 scale with a properly geared motor has a lot of power. Where I run, almost all 1/12 is run with stock motors.
As always the best car to get is the one with the best local support. Others racers and your LHS are your best resource when choosing a new chassis.

yeah the local track (by local its 60 miles away) follows roar rules. i've been looking at the crc carpet knife or t-fource. another question is can i run a 1/12 scale on-road on asphalt or is it only good for carpet? also would a novak gtx esc fit on a carpet knife? thanks in advance.

You should be able to run on asphalt, as long as it's not a broken up parking lot covered with rocks and debris.... in other words, the smoother the better :)
Good Luck!

ok thanks a bunch. the closest track to me happens to be asphalt and i know there is a difference in grip between carpet and asphalt i still want all the practice time i can get without driving 60 miles.

1/12 Rocks! I've just sold my pro4 and all the TC gears and getting another 1/12
(CRC Carpet knife).
1/12 should work on both carpet and (smooth) outdoor track. For some reason, my L4 seems to handle a lot better at our outdoor track.

yeah the cars go really fast so its going to take alot of practice for me not to crash like mad. but it seems like there is alot less things to adjust on the 1/12 and it focuses more on driving skill than the perfect setup.
