I just got a com lathe and was wondering how much difference a $90.00 diamond bit will make other than the cool rainbow shine on the com? thanks

Carbide will cut just the same, as long as it is sharp.
A saw blade sharpening shop near in my town sharpens my carbide for $2.
So, the choice is $90 now, which will last a long time, but eventually it WILL need sharpening. Or just use the carbide and throw a couple of bucks at it every once in a while.
I would much rather have my carbide sharpened 45 times @ $2. hahaha!
See ya...
Diamond is clearly beter. I've seen them been used over 1000 yes one thousand time without a sharpening. They never wear out, and never leave that blackish color on the commafter cutting. $90 is worth it, youll probably never even use 1000 cuts with it. $90 is worth it, look into the HUDY ones. They are arguably have the best lathe's and lathe supplies.
sirspeedy is right, i make carbide cutting tools for a living, for cutting coms, the carbide tool is more then enough, your money would be better spent some where else.

I have a carbide blade. I've used it maybe 100 times or so, never had to have it sharpened yet, and no black marks or anything on the comm. Just make very shallow cuts. I thought about getting a diamond bit, but I don't see the reason anymore.
