View Full Version : Good drift setup?

I'm looking to create a 1/10 scale drifter. I heard Tamiya kits are pretty decent for a setup. If so, what kits and how much? What's a good environment for drifting? Is good ol' asphalt good or should I take it elsewhere? I'm not too good on electrics at all, so if you can add something please do. Thanks for looking!

all i know about drifting is abs or pvc tires and a big parking lot would be nice. i bet you could drift with a tt-01 or 02. most drifters are 4wd with 27t motor

i drift a hpi rs4 rally and its so sweet, i have a novak 5800 in it with six cells you gotta have a lsd or locked diff,(i run locked diff with a one way front diff, it acts as a e-brake when i need it) i run electrical tape on the tires. try it out

the tape on the tires is good for a higher power vehicle cause it drifts with a tad more grip than pvc and abs, and looks more realistic. im talking 35-45 mph drifts its sick.

I use some ABS wheels, and sometimes insulation tape wrapped on rubbers. A TL01 is good for drifting, but you'd need to either add ball diffs, or lock the gear diffs (cheaper, but it sends the cars ability to corner when not drifting down the pan).
In general any 4WD touring car will be good for drifting, ideally I'd say one thats shaft driven, has ball diff's and oil shocks, but these are all personal preferences (maybe look at a used TC3 on ebay? they are brilliant drifters).

if you plan on drifting with PVC/ABS/Yok Drift rings all you need is the cheapest chassis you can find, and bearings. With pvc you dont need ANY chassis set up or tuning at all what so ever. If you drifting with drift radials you going to need a brushless or something with ALOT of torque. I personaly like to drift on tape. Must faster then PVC, and takes ALOT of setup to beable to drift it really good. If you got any questions at all feel free to msg me on aim. I used to run www.rcdrift.com and still own the name. So I think I know what I am talking about ;)

Problem with tape is it comes off very quick and don't last long, thus very costly compared to some ABS tyres.

I bought some stage D tires and used them with a TL-01. Along with a rear locked differential and an untampered open front, I can get realistic on throttle power slides, not unlike drifting, but with a little more traction and the ability to carry some more speed. I use a novak brushless in it.

Thanks for posting guys, you're giving me a ton of good ideas. Would a TT-01 be good? Should I lock the rear diffs if I use PVC/ABS? If so, how do I do that?

Im drifting with a TB-02, 23T stock motor (tamiya RZ) and my diffs tightened up real tight. I use electrical tape on my wheels (stock tamiya's) and i run it on my street which is super smooth. I only got into RC for drifting coz its so damn cool and thats all ill be doing.
the 23T motor is good, but i felt that i got better drift action with the silver can. Im going to play a little more with the 23T before i go back.
my biggest issue is finding some buds to drift with. im not game to go drifting at the local tracks as i hear drifting is frowned upon at race meets.
surely the time has come for drifting to have its own class and for it to be recognised as a real RC sport.
Ragey.

hey ragey some people are just stupid and dont realize it takes alot of skill to drift, so there just plain ignorant. My friends and i actually drift 1:1 cars and most people(media) are just now recognizing it as a real sport.
as for Npedeinsanity get a decent touring car so you can upgrade it like you know your gonna wanna. if you decide to go with a high powered motor, belt driven cars aren't that much fun when you rip belts alot, i personally like shaft driven vehicles. my pro4 comes with a spool( in rear for drifting) and a one way front diff, but i know i overkilled, i plan on going with an insane bl motor nad li-po's.

slam the maxx.... keep the v-tread tires.... good motors/batts and hit sum loose dirt and yes... to be honest... i sued to drift corners with my maxx when i raced.... helped push competitors out of the way by forcing them outside hard and psyching them out....
as for the bolink... if its RWD (im 99% sure it is) throw sum super hard tires on the back and stiffen up the suspension and go :)

sweet tires one thing about them that i dont get is this
FEATURES: Molded from hard compound rubber that has been developed
to prevent drifting.
Allows high revving nitro drifting on paved surfaces
How does it prevent drifting yet allow it

it takes NO skill what so ever to drift on PVC
i agree and disagree with this. While anyone can drift with PVC, tape, whatever. To develop a killer style is one thing that takes skill. getting round corners on a track while drifing, and racing with other drifters takes a certain skill. Doing it consistantly over and over again requires more practise.
some of the sgdrifters videos depict some real bad ass skillz.
