I wanted to get some idea of how some of the other tracks were designed so that I could get some ideas for another track.

Here's our first track. The pic was taken during the winter season.

Our track is located outside of the US. We used high grade material for the surface and we get some amazing grip even when the temp is near freezing.

grandmasterofpool
06-11-2001, 12:03 AM
Jace-that's because tires grip better and better as track temp decreases ;)

Jace2000
06-11-2001, 01:34 AM
????
That's against all my RC knowledge. Are you sure about that Grandmasterofpool? The surface looses grip as the temp decreases and you have to use softer compound tires to keep the grip. In winter time we use tires that are soft as **** . If we used those tires during the summer time our cars would be doing flips everytime we go into a corner due to overgrip.
On the contrary, we use harder tires during the summer seasons to compensate for the hot surface.

"Cold tires" Loss of traction, tires hardin. Cold weather means less traction.

Well maybe that's not true for RC tires because they're so small, but on a real car they grip better when the track is cold. The tires themselves have to warm up for this to be true so maybe the RC tires can't warm up.

GMOP, tires grip better when the track is warm. The warmer the track, the quicker the tires warm up. Thats why when its cold on a track cars take longer to gain grip and why they have so little at the start, as compared to the warm tracks. If this is wrong it goes against all my learning of watching Daytona 24hr, Lemans 24hr, BTCC, Speedvision TCGT, Petit lemans and all the other great forms of touring car/prototype racing.

On certain tracks made of certain asfault the HOTTER the track gets the softer the surface gets and oils bubble up through the surface making it slick. When this happens the track will become slick.

If you watch NASCAR racing they're always talking about falling track temperatures and how they help the cars handle better. Like I said though, it's pry not the same on a smaller scale.

Mark, can't wait to come check out the track, but I think I'll have to pass on the 17th cause I remembered it's Father's Day. When's the next one after that?

This is an oval track in Sweetwater Tennessee it is red clay that is watered down then with the three wheeler in the middle of the track it is packed down. 60 people showed up and raced till midnight.

Its not that R/C tire don't warm up they just don't get as warm as full scale. They might get up to 120* or so on a 70* day. I've had my xxxnt's onroad tires warm enough that they are as soft as my offroad racing tires. That was a hot day, 100* or so, no breeze no clouds. Nice thing about that though is the hobby shop put out a cooler of pop for registered racers to pick from.

Geez, everyone's tracks look really nice, especially that first road course pic! I always thought my LHS track looked kinda messy and "ghetto" but now I know for sure... but it's still a local track!

Mark98SS
06-12-2001, 08:16 AM
Yeah, it gets a little dusty at times. I don't water the surface for fear of running my well dry. You just gotta change those air filters & use the right tires. We run mostly gas cars-alot of 8th scales & T-Maxxes, some GTs. Probably will run again on Sunday July 1st. I know next week is one of those "commercial holidays" but there are plenty of dads with R/C cars in Frederick County that want to bash for Fathers Day.

Negotiator and Trekker: Sorry for not responding sooner... the track is not in Philadelphia, but it is fairly close. I live in NE Philly and it's about a 30-45 drive to get there. It's called DC Ultra Trax (web page (http://www.jcrchobbies.com)).

I've only been able to race there once (opening day - April 18th) because I've been extremely busy lately. I hope to get there soon. Anyway, I had a great time. AC power is available and there's a hobby shop on site. I believe it's $12 per class (3 qualifiers and a main).
