i was wondering about how the power is distributed to servos for electricflight. do you still use the 4.8V battery or is there a specific way it is wired with the flight battery. any and all info pertaining to this would be helpful.

thanks

Hi Griff,
The Electronic Speed Control (ESC) that plugs into ch 3 of the receiver has a regulator circuit that supp;ies a constant 5V to the receiver and servos, regardles of the motor battery voltage (within limits) This feature is normally referred to as the BEC. The literature with the individual device gives the maximum voltage rating, and the maximum number of servos it can supply power to.

Dave has it exactly right. The BEC, battery elimination circut, eliminates the need for a separate receiver battery in most 3-4 channel electric planes. The typical BEC can handle 3-4 micro/mini servos. However if you are flying a larger electric that may need 4 or more larger or digital servos, you may need to use a separate receiver pack, just as you use in glow planes.

There are also "super" BECs that are separate from the ESC that can handle these larger servo counts.

However, for the typical under 32 oz electric, with 3 mini/micro servos, the built in BEC is usually all that is needed.

Do you have a specific set-up in mind?

nothing specific yet, im just trying to get all my info straight so that when it is time to put something together im not wasting time or money. i am looking for something like a cub, cessna, beaver, etc, because i want to do floats. but i want a kit so i can do it all from scratch and keep myself entertained this winter. any ideas on where to look for this kit would be appreciated.
thanks

Can't comment on those specific planes. Sounds like you are specifically into scale plans.

Since you are an experienced pilot, and I don't fly scale, I will let others advixe you here. If you just want an easy to build small electric kit, try the planes from www.mountainmodels.com . Their kits are high quality and easy to build.
