View Full Version : Starting a Team - Need Advice

There are about 4 or 5 guys - including myself - at my local track who have really gotten to know each other. For me, the camaraderie has totally changed the way I approach racing, so I wanted to approach the guys about starting a “team”. I’m not talking about a competitive team or some kind of exclusive little club or anything; just something that’s representative of the group.

Because each of us was pretty much alone at some point at our local track, we try to be very aware of new people at the track and we try to welcome them and help them get their feet wet. I think it would be really cool if some new guy showed up at the track and asked who he should talk to in order to learn the ropes, and someone said, “Hey, go talk to Team ABC, they’ll treat you right”.

Again, I’m not interested in forming a competitive team or anything like that; just something that’s representative of our teamwork. You know: something that creates a greater sense of “belonging”. So, I was wondering what each of you would think if one of the guys you raced with every week came up to you and said, “Hey, what would you think about starting a team, just for the heck of it?”. Is it something you’d be interested in or would you look at the guy like he just tried to sell you a Mary Kay product?

If you think it’s a good idea or you’ve been down this road in the past, what suggestions and advice would you offer? If you think it’s not such a great idea, please tell me. Keep in mind that none of us are (even close to being) expert drivers. We all race stock, place in the middle of the field, and have a blast in the process.

I think that you could form a team mainly as a comradery thing that anything else. Just make some shirts, pit together, and have fun!

Its also nice if you all have the same car so you can swap parts if something breaks too.

Tbone,

GREAT idea! I agree on getting some shirts made, it'll help you stand out from the crowd so if anyone does need help..you'd be easier to find. You could also do hats, embroidery shops can usually make hats in small quantities pretty cheap. It might not be a bad idea to plan some stuff out of the RC circle too. Maybe once a month go out for something to eat, go to a car show, see a game, anything really. You got my vote.

Thanks for all the feedback, guys. I thought it would be neat to throw up a website, get some pit towels and stickers for our gear, and maybe even some nice hoodies or hats. Also, like Elcid said, I'd like to try to get the group together off the track, as well. Two of us live within minutes of the track, and I've thought of just having everyone over at the house for some BBQ after some hard racing.

bone,

I think its a fantastic idea. I think you should go do it. Honestly, whats the worse that could happen? It doesn't work out so well, you had a good time doing it and you guys are all still buddies. The best that could happen?....i think you can imagine this becoming very big and very very cool/fun

I say go for it. Sounds like it would be a blast, good way to have some friends too. I know my wife would like me to do something like that as I don't really have any friends.
