Tamiya makes several buggies if you just want to mess around and have fun. If you want to race, you should consider an Associate B4 (go to www.towerhobbies.com) or a Team Losi XXX (the BK2 is the most recent one). Go to www.horizonhobby.com for Losi products. Of course there are many other sources as well, but those are two big ones. Oh yeah, and there are also 4wd buggies like the Team Losi XXX-4 (also a racing buggy more than a basher).
Losi XXX BK2 or Team Associated B4 are the two most competative electric 2wd buggies.
Which ever one is best supported by your local hobby shop (parts availability) and most racers run in your area (setup advice and parts you can borrow at the track) would be my pick.

Everyone always says this, but I can't emphasize it enough: If you plan on racing, go to your track BEFORE buying and see what people are running. Even for experienced racers, it's always nice having people to bounce ideas off of. As a newcomer, you'll come to appreciate the advice they can give you regarding setup, driving, etc.
I love both cars for different reasons. Out of the box, the BK2 is easier to drive in most conditions, but with a proper setup, the B4 can be driven more aggressively without getting bent out of shape (in my opinion, of course). I also think the B4 is easier to wrench on and I've always been a huge fan of the Stealth tranny.
Both cars are tanks as far as durability goes.
If I were you, my deciding factor would be what people around me are driving. If that comes out as a wash, I'd personally recommend the B4... but that's just a personal preference. It's strange, I own a BK2, B4, T4, and MF2 (Losi's truck version of the BK2). I'd recommend the B4 over the BK2 but the MF2 over the T4.
Go figure.
