Is a butane torch with a soldering tip too hot to solder on my car?

*****WHOA***** Those things get awful darned hot. If you have ot use it be VERY careful. Try to "tin" all parts of your solder joint before actually soldering it. How to "tin" you might ask? That just means to apply a little solder to each component and then you can just put the components together and apply the soldering iron for a shorter time. Also, more solder doesn't mean a better connection. You should be able to make out the details after you have finished, like the strands of the wire, the outline of the solder tab on the motor, etc. Hope this has been of some help.

I've used butane irons namy times and they're awesome. They heat up quickly and can serve as an excellent field iron where electricity isn't accessible. Mine actually worked better than my bench iron. You can also get a rechargable iron that heats up very quickly and can solder up to 100 joints between charges. In RC terms it means you can do about 20 solder joints, but it's still very convenient.

I agree with Mr. P ... I have had a few butane irons. They get really stinking hot (good thing for "big" jobs like soldering motors on, bats, etc). They also get really stinking hot really stinking fast !
Like cold to soldering in less than 30 seconds.
I have a 5 year old Weller. It was top of the line when I bought it, but I am having a heck of a time finding new tips (they eventually burn out :( ).
So, is it too hot ? Nope. Besides all the ones I have seen are adjustable ! They can be REALLY hot, or just able to melt solder. Your choice.

Anyone got any cool online places that carry Weller stuff ?
