I was curious if you can just get drift tires for any car and put them on or do you have to have one of the drift cars just to do drifting?

You can put drift tires on any touring car, no problems at all. Just get some PVC the right diameter for your rims, cut the PVC to the proper width and glue. Simple and cheap.

for a first time drifter I would suggest just going with the PVC. But PVC/ABS drifting is sooooooooooooo slow. Another option are the yok drift tires. WAIST OF MONEY same results as PVC. If your using brushless and can go with drift radials. But the drifts are alot faster and take alot more skill. HPI, Yok, Tamiya make drift radials sold in the US. You can also search ebay for JDM radials. Your last option that I prefer and have used for over 4 years is tape drifting. Its a high speed drift, and chassis set up is MAJOR.
