View Full Version : Does a fast 7.2/8.4 volt setup exist?

I'm looking for something like a deep V hull...but I was wondering if I could easily get a fast(by fast I mean not boring...I'm used to speed coming from nitro/electric trucks though) 7.2/8.4 volt setup in something that doesn't have a lot of DIY work and stuff...I can build things from kits but I'll probably screw up anything I have to make/mount myself. I want it to be able to take reasonably sized waves without flipping, I know the limits, but I want to be able to at least have some fun on a windy day...Brushless would also be nice, I use the SS5800 setup in my RC10B4 and I like it because of the simplicity of that system itself, and I hate brushed maintenence.
Am I just dreaming or is there something out there? I've been around here a lot asking questions about certain boats...can never find something right heh. I'm wanting a 6-7 cell setup so I don't have to buy double the batteries, a new charger, etc. Trying to keep cost fairly low.
Thanks

BBY (www.bbyracing.com) is one of my favorite soures for fast electrics. They make a boat (the War Zone Jr) that will hit 22mph on 6 cells and a ROAR stock motor. If you would prefer a mod motor or brushless, the 6 cell oval master is a great choice. It is made in either CF or ABS, and could easily exceed 30mph with the most basic BL or higher-end modified motor and 6 or 7 cells. Also, just so you know, the RC car sensored BL systems are not remotely near the power output of the sensorless boat motors. However, if you already have it, by all means use it. It will be fine for sport running, but if you wanted to race, it will disqualify you from the brushed class, and it won't keep up with BL. Another thing to keep in mind is that because boats run at almost full load all the time, expect short battery lives, especially on a 6 cell boat.

I would not recommend the use of the SS5800 unit in a boat. Too many have fried in marine use - the Kv is too high for most of the boats in which it has been used. It is also very sensitive to water, and since the typical box art boat leaks like a sieve, it is a recipe for disaster.
A decent marine BL system will cost (new) at least $200-250 for motor and controller. You might also want to consider the Fine Design line of boats @ http://www.finedesignrc.com/hullsfine.asp or OffshoreElectrics @ http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/MainPage.htm .

Very true fluid. He did say he wanted to keep the cost fairly low, so I am assuming he already has some RC car mod motors. If so, a 10t mod motor is a good choice in a BBY Oval Master, if not even a few more turns. That setup could easily break 30, and would be much more reliable than the SS5800. Later, if he wanted to take it up a notch, he could go to a 6 cell Lehner Basic motor or comparable (Hacker B50 S, etc) and the hull would take it in stride, as well as increasing speed significantly. Fine Design also makes great boats, the FDM Force 21 and 22 are real screamers. OE also makes good stuff, but he did ask to stay with 6 cells, and all of OE's stuff is 12-16 cell.

the oval master 21 is fun with a 19 turn spec motor. the cost is reasonable too. 10 turn may not make it in that hull. i think a 15 turn would be alright for fast sport running...if you pay close attention to the temps, and don't run for too long. with a chameleon 2 you'll get good run time and decent speed, and because it's not a high output motor you won't find yourself replacing brushes and truing comm's every other day.
