Man after reading about what some of our fellow R/C hobbiest have done to thier vehicles I have to say anything is possible. Which canned heat are you going to "modify"?

The www.rcmt.net (http://www.rcmt.net) message board has a Canned Heat forum, lots of info there, I am sure it lists what motors they have tried and such. Good luck, I've seen some awesome things done with the canned heat, from the simple extra battery and a Tamiya mini motor, to a full tube frame chassis for it!

They are made by Tyco, and i plan on getting a second one(For those of you who also do Model Rocketry, imagine a C6-3 duct taped to the top of the car, there was nothing left).
They are some sweet little cars, i plan on another one, just until i get the MiniZ.

Hey i do rocetry, i have a Big Daddy, a Mongoose, and a Star Shootin Son of a Gun[the newest one estes makes]!I have strapped a a D-42 on top of my Tyco Dodge Viper!I stripped the thing down so it was as light as possible, then strapped the engine on with about 8 layers of electrical tape and 2 layers of handy old Duct tape! Then it was the time to test, i counted 5,4,3,2,1 then pushed the button to ignite the engine! The thing went about 70 feet at probly 20 mph down my road when the engine melted through the top of my plastic viper body :( so that was the end of my first attempt of make my rocket powered TYCO P.O.S viper, and i havnt done it again because im saving for bearings for my Rustler and dont want to spend $10 on rocket engines!Next time i try this i will drill a metal plate on top of my viper so it dosnt melt through again!

a canned heat is a rc car like a mini z except its only 20 bucks and it can take slot car motors and have battery mods to make it go faster than a mini z that costs 150 at www.rcmt.com (http://www.rcmt.com) go to the fourms near the bottom there are many pics mods and the cars come in dodge durangos trucks belairs hondas ferrais they come in a tube rtr for 20 bucks they take 2 double A batterys
Jeepinator, you *gotta* get one. In fact, EVERYBODY GO OUT AND BUY A CANNED HEAT. It's cheaper than a set of tires, and a whole lotta fun.
Here's the basic scoop: They're 1/24 scale cars that come packaged in a plastic tube about the size of a 40oz. The "lid" of the can is the remote control, which controls non-progressive throttle and steering on the car up to about 20 feet away.
Here's what you can modify on the car, AFAIK:
1: add a third AA (or AAA) to increase speed/longevity. If you get one of the newer cars, you can run up to four AA's, though the older ones tend to end up with fried receivers. With 4 1600 mA NiMH AA's and the stock motor, the thing *cooks*.
2: Swap out the motor with a Kyosho Mini4WD motor--there's a whole series of motors listed on this page: http://www.easycall.com.ph/~yahoo/motors.html
Apparantly, the 4000+ mA motors don't work so good because they overload the Canned Heat's receiver and it eventually fries. Plus, the car doesn't go that much faster. But, the Mini4wd motors are a direct drop-in replacement.
Tire mods: There's several options here. You can use mini-foams, which're nice because they improve traction and suspension (otherwise, there is none.) You can also go to Wal-Mart or Target, and buy little mini Monster-trucks (I think they're called MaxxTraxx's) as tire donors. Haven't tried it yet, but it sounds cool: more ground clearance, higher gear ratio, wider stance.
The thing that would really make Canned Heats true Mini-Z beaters would be to retrofit progressive steering into them somehow. I know some have managed to squeeze micro-servos and receivers into 'em, but that ain't cheap if you don't have the parts just lying around. Without upgraded steering though, controlling the Canned Heat with *any* speed mods can be a pain. In fact, if I just wanna chase the cats around, I drop mine down to bone-stock configuration, which makes it easy to control, and much better at feline-escape maneuvers. As for the rocket-engine mods... well, why waste the canned heat? You *know* what's gonna happen...

Hey wait.......What if u put 2 or 3, 9 volt batterys in it!!!!!One nine volt equals 6 1.5 volt batteries[AA batteries are 1.5 volts for all u who spend to much time on RC and not enugh time listening to teachers or dont read labels, this definatley includes me!]That would difinatley zap it along good!Hey i have a question, how do you fit a big motor in such a little car????I dont see how u could fit a mod motor in a car that small!
bullfrog
06-06-2001, 08:45 PM
well the motors that we are talking about r like the ones in the mini z's not 540 size motors. o and dont u think a 9v would fry the board?
Jo_bomb17
06-07-2001, 10:14 AM
Oh so thats what u mean! :D And yes a nine volt batt. would fry the board!I think...
XXXER
06-07-2001, 01:57 PM
No, it will not fry the board, before i kamakazied my C H, I fitted a 9V battery, I went fast for a second, then went back to the normal speed, I do not know why, but that is what it did, i think maybe my battery was dead, who knows, but i think that a 9V would probably not have the run times of other batteries you can get.
Also, i think i may want to go pick up a new one, i kinda miss the lil tike

i had one..got bored with it and took it back and got my 20 bucks back.. i couldn't stand the steering.. i'll wait for the HPI Micro to come out.. NOW that looks cool.. there gonna be about 100 bucks minus electronics (you need ESC and radio gear)..
check out the video at www.hpiracing.com (http://www.hpiracing.com)
(edit).. btw its www.rcmt.net (http://www.rcmt.net) NOT www.rcmt.com (http://www.rcmt.com)
so make sure you go to the correct site :)

Hey I have one to and it is the bug and it was cool until I got into the real thing.
Hey all,
Just a few answers to random posts above... The dodge Ram is actually an older model, but has a reliable receiver that can typically handle increased voltages... running a 9v *will* fry the board, if you can get that much run time out of it, and really, once you get past 6v, there's not much point (oops, did I just say that :) )...the steering is halfway between being a total drag and pretty darn cool: it uses a magnetic servo, which only permits non-progressive action, but since there aren't any gears in there, nothing gets stripped with continuous abuse, but that dang all-or-nothing steering makes control at speed an almost pointless gesture (traction roll...bubabumpbumpbump)... Yes, they are available at Wal-Mart, assuming they're in stock ;) ...And you know what, they're still cool, even *after* you have the real thing :D :D
