Some of my friends and I are going somewhere to jump about four RC10GTs off the equivelant of a 2 story building onto concrete. We want to get as many jumps as possible (more that four  )
I know some crazy stuff might happen to the cars that we might not expect. If anyone has had experince with this please let me know. I'm trying to think of all the things that are most likely to break.
I need everyones input here, tell me what you think, what I should do prepare...
I'm ordering lots of spur gears, turnbuckles, and ball cups. No rear shock towers or bulkheads. Too much time to fix and a piece of g10 plate zip tied to the a-arms keeps the car running enough to get it over the ramp. Come to think of it I sould make some g10 plates that I can zip-tie busted front a-arms onto without having to use the also busted front bulkhead.
I'll also bring a small torch to bend back any bent chassis.
To prevent as much damage to the front as possible I am thinking of getting rid of all the hingepins and using small zipties in their place (in the front only). This way when it hits the parts will fly off easier and have a greater chance of surviving. It will be heck on the turnbuckles, but they are cheap and can also be improvised.
One major concern I do have is the engine. I am afraid of the chassis bending so voilently it warps or cracks the crankcase where the engine mounts. I have no experience jumping this high and do not know if it is possible.
One solution I have been thinking of is mounting the engine on nylon blocks. Don't know how it would work, but its a thought. I forsee many stripped spur gears...
Alright, your guys turn. Tell me anything.

thing to worry bout is how it lands. It could land upside down, and that wouldnt be good. Could land on both bumpers. Just look at all areas of the car, if it wont survive a swing of the hammer, it probably wont do you any good

Oh yeah, radio equipment. I don't know if shock can kill it. I know I will hold the front servos down with double sided tape because I have bent the chassis enough to ruin a servo before.

All I can say is you will NEED to land rubber side down. If you land flat you should just bottom REAL hard and probably kill the motor at that time. You might bend some things or snap a an arm or two... but I think for the most part it will survive.
Now... Why?? And when can we get pics???

LOL WOOOO HOOO! :D
Land flat, and don't break any municipal codes. :D
Search for videos starting at SlapmaFro (http://www.slapmafro.com), I've seen one of an ST jumping 5 car lengths and driving away. It's all how it comes in for a landing. Practice with smaller ones first and get the hang of how to keep it level on long jumps. Fail safe and TRS of course.
Trinity engine mount/brace might help you out, SS bolts.
Good luck and bash safe, secure the area so no one gets hurt (or sued!)

Heres the plan so far...
The first car to go off will be stripped and have the bare minimum to run. No shocks, hingepins replaced by zip-ties ect. All connections will be intentionally weak to save as many parts as possible. This will get me warmed up and give me some extra pratice. Next to go will be the crappy GT I traded for. It will be mostly stock. We will patch up anything on the first two and jump them as many times as possible. The last one will be my GT, the one I have built up and put all my money and energy into. I will only jump it once. Maybe twice if no major parts break.
As for why? Why not? How awesome is jumping off a two story building? Its also for bragging rights. And a killer video. It also probably means I will have to wait for Christmas to get an iPod Nano, but that can wait.

My friend and I were jumping his GT one time and the chassis slapped the pavement when it landed. This caused a radio glitch and the truck took off at WOT!! It went across the street, over a mostly-buried rock on the other side (luckily there's no curbs on that street), tumbled through the air (still at WOT) and bounced around and landed on its wheels! But it ran out of gas at the very moment that it came to rest. Otherwise who knows where it would've gone! My friend turned the radio off and back on, and it was fine.
The moral of the story is...I hope a glitch like this doesn't happen to you!

i found this interesting, not only is this about 2 stories high, but he PEAKS at that!! completely over the house, only having the body pop off........

Didn't think of glitches...
That could be a problem, if it gets out of the lot it's nothing but a good ole five lane intersection.

You kiddies do know you can control for&aft in-flight via braking/accell rite?

i can help with the jump me and a friend jumped(well tried) his house with my EB4 S2 Pro,the jump went well but on landing i slammed into the wood fence in the back yard and the EB4 was stuck in the fence
broke every lower arm, crushed the front wheels, tweaked the chassis, cracked both engine mounts, destoryed 3 shocks :p
but hey it was fun and you most likley will not get 2 jumps out of any of the trucks

Important question; has anyone heard of a cracked engine case?

Important question; has anyone heard of a cracked engine case?
Cracked, no.....But I landed badly once from about five feet up and broke a 1/4 inch hole in the side of a Nitrostar 25 when the engine mount broke and took part of the crankcase with it.
Personally, I don't expect any of these cars to survive the jumps, not landing on a hard surface. I DO want to see the video though. That ought to be wild.

Man. I just watched that video. He's got a 1/8 buggy with a heck of a lot more speed that my GT can muster. It makes me sick to imagine what I could do with a 1/8 buggy. I have a ramp that looks exactly like the one in the video and a nice long hill to run down. I can't get that high if I wanted to. Dang! I need to get one of those.

Yeah... I just traded my GT for a Storm - the motor. Threw a Picco .26 in it and it rips. I love it... It's just as durable if not moreso than my FT RC10GT, is faster, and handles better. 1/8 all the way... (but its more expensive)

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this...but tire choice can help. Race tires are TERRIBLE jumping tires. Go for big tires, like Masher 2K's. They're big and heavy, and soft. Soft means the sidewalls will help absorb some of the energy on the landing. Big and heavy means you'll actually be able to move the truck around in the air.
My advice is to start small. Starting off by jumping a house is a bad way to go. You're going to panic and it's not going to go well. Start on small jumps and work your way up to the bigger ones. Learn how to control your trucks in the air. Once you do that, it's just a matter of keeping your composure and remembering what you've learned from all of those smaller jumps.

Start small? This is the norm for us! There are no tracks or anything near us, we have nothing to do but jump our cars. We're sick of this, we need more air! Its like a cocain addiction, after every high you need just a little more.
Anyways, the jump Friday busted. I missed the ramp and ran the first car straight into the wall. The pipe came off, radio convienently stopped working at full throttle and by the time we got it shut off we had to leave. (you don't ask, I won't tell) The main point is, Friday failed, but we will try again. Also I forgot my starter box on the roof. That is kind of important.
I also found a new jump site to try later. Huge hill. At least six stories. There are three levels of houses going up it, the big rich houses. Insanely steep. Acording to the laws of physics the kenetic energy the car builds up going down the hill will be transferred to into potential energy as the car goes up in the air. Since energy cannot be distroyed, theoretically the car will go as high as the top of the hill. I kind of doubt that because the car may very well destroy itself on the ramp, or the engine will max out and slow the cars decent.
BTW, excellent idea with the tires. Love it! I'm going to take an old pair of tires and put weights in them just for jumping... very good stuff.
Since weights will become unbalanced easily I am thinking of replacing the foam inserts with ace bandages wraped tightly around the rim. Also might drill lots of holes in the rim so I can soak the tires in water for extra weight (if needed).
That should make for some insanely fast flips! If anything it will be intertaining watching the car spin. Get some nice waterlogged tires, hit the ramp and lock up the brakes as soon as it is in the air...

Did it. Ramp was super easy, very predictable. The jump sucked because the car was way out of tune because it was raining and I didn't have much time to mess with it. It went over the wall though. Damage report; lost dogbone. Air filter also fell of, but we picked that up.
OK, so the first jump was lame. Sorry for building all that up. I retreat in shame for now, but just wait.
I'll be back someday.
