Hi all, back when i used the Frog, Hornet (elec.) and the Inferno (gas) (mid 80s) there was no internet to gather wealth and infomation.

That said, i want to get my son involved in the rc hobby. Question is, being out of the loop for so long, what is good now a days?

I dont want to get him something with the power of the Inferno, is there something inexpensive he can get his hands on to try out?

Any suggestions would be great. Doesnt have to be high-end equiptment, just something with some speed and duability, buggy preferably.

Thanks for any help, advice.

I had a Golden EAgle Jeep back in the early 80's and the First Gen RC-10.

I think a RTR Durax Stadium Truck Electric is a good start. They Got a 1 year stress waranty. that is really nice.

I got my Son into the hobby 2yrs ago as well as returning to it myself my son was 6yrs old. I got us set up with a pair of Traxxas Rustlers. We race once in a while but mostly play bumper tag in front of the house. We have hours of fun running and fixing our trucks. Traxxas makes great beginer cars and trucks. Many after market upgrades and things to do with the vehicales are also a plus. The Traxxas Bandit(Buggy),Rustler(Stadium Truck), and Stampede(Monster truck) share some basic parts so converting it from one to another is only a matter of changing out a few parts and you have another truck or buggy in a couple of hours. My Son and I like our Traxxas rustys!

I'd vote for the Traxxas Rustler as well.

Good, solid starter machine with enough ground clearance to run in the yard.

Rustler is great or so I've heard.....also if you want something else try the Associated B4. How old is he? You could build the kit version if you want him to see how it's put together, that way if it breaks you know exactly how to fix it. The carbon B4 is frickin bulletproof for just about anything, i've had mine since December 04 and I've yet to break a thing, and I bash it hard. Only things i've needed to buy for it are parts that've worn out(Tires mainly) and it's good to go. I know when I'm wrenching on my other cars and I just want to drive something I always have the B4 ready to screw around with.

Just recommending one because its the most flawless RC that i've owned, and its a great build if you get the kit. Not discouraging the rustler, but I haven't owned one, just heard that it makes a great starter RC.

Great! thanks for all the replies.

Looks like i'll be looking into these options. Hes 14 and as far as building one, i do recall putting together my frog back in the days and ended up shelving it for a few months cause i was so frustrated. Heh, maybe hes a bit more mechanically inclined :o

Ok, so we did it, and NO i couldnt get one WITH out me having some fun too :D

Anyhoot, how do we get more power/running time out of these things?! right now it comes with the 20 turn factory motor (do i upgrade to 15?)

as far as run time, maybe im spoiled with the inferno but these things dont have much juice... can i improve? Have the black widow chargers with 3000 batteries... suggestions?http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Central/trax.jpg

Way to go Dad! We did the same! To save you a Little money a Grief here's the order I would go if I had it to do all over again.
1. Get new MG servos! The OME servos don't last long.
2. Alum. Idler gear. The stock plastic one will not hold up to hotter motors.
3. Alum shock caps. The OME's will pop off durring really rough landings.
4. Better tires.
5. As for motors with your stock ESC The Reedy 19T spec quad Mag motor is GREAT! or if yo can afford it The Novak SS5800 the motor holds up the best with very little maint. at all. These motors will save you money in the long haul! It's the way I should of gone first!
Thats it for the basics. The rest is up to you! I'll post a few web sites deticated to the rustys there you will find usefull info!

6. Nimh 3300-3600mah batts to make the motor sing!
