gotta share this with ya.....

i got into this hobby in 1990, with a traxxas sledgehammer,..and was hooked.didnt take long, and i wanted to race, with little extra money, i had to depend on driving skill. so, the sldge got lowered, 2.2. stadium tires, an LSII body, ( wow, showing my age there), a 13x3, and at the time, top of the line 1700 scrc's, and a novak 410. after the sublte laughs died down, it was race time. against the then new T2, and losi's, i WON mod truck! .not because i had the best stuff, but because i drove that truck almost every day, 3-4 packs thru it a day. fast forward, buddy buys a hpi rs-4.....state of the art then,.....and it sits on a shelf for 4 years. decides to sell it, so i take it to the lhs to sell, only to enter it in a race that night.:D 2nd place. starting to really like this racing thing, and i did it with a 4 yr. old car,...hmmmmm. fast forward again, to big boys toys, fall river mass. indoor off road track, and here i am again, with a stampede! similar results,.....3rd place. i got killed in the straights, so-so in the corners, but,.....i was consistent!!!! nothing, i repeat nothing, beats "seat time" in my opinion. i guess this is a thread to all those starting out racing, it may have been local tracks, but you dont need $2500 worth of car to have fun, and do well. driving, and learning that smooth is fast, will always get you further ahead than the 7x1 in a berillium metal, federation approved, top secret whatever car and radio. like i said, been in this for 15 years, and seen alot of $$$$ get beat by someone with a love for the hobby, and alot of packs ran thru their car/truck to learn how to drive smooth......can i get an AMEN!

oh yeah, raced last night at local parking lot gathering, touring car, w/ my TB-01 rally......won a heat race, and 3rd again..:D

grab a few buddies, go to your local wal-mart, kmart, and set up an informal track......draw the track out in washable chaulk, use dollar store frisbees for corner markers, and tear it up! trust me, wont take too long and r/c'rs will come out of the woodwork, strike a deal with the store, and hold wekly "get togethers",.....your racing season how now begun :P

LOL, i guess it depends alot on where you are, and how te store or parking lot you are using feels about it. Personally, i found supermarkets, at about 9 p.m., are good for that. As for the "tyco" cars, we had enough kids show up, that we even had a a little "intermission racing" for them, and they LOVED it, only to have mom and dad eventually get them into hobby class. this one guy would bring the most hack job cars there, and have or 3 to sell on the tailgate of his truck, nothing facny, but for someone in the crowd wanting to get into it, for $50, rt, they would show up the next week, and one more person was added to our little racing community.

p.s., i suck at the typing.

to paraphrase, i guess wal-mart would NOT be the ideal location to try this out at, now that you bring those valid points up! lol

I've always said it's the Driver Skill more than Car Bling! Once you get the skill maybe then get the bling. But hey if you have money to waste then go ahead and buy $1000.00 RC and get spanked!

When the security dudes drive up in their Malibu, you're gonna have to let them drive your car.
:D
They'll prolly run you off anyway... even if you set up wayyyyy on the far side of the parking lot from the store.

Find a place like a bank or credit union that has a parking lot that isn't used on weekends... if it has a drive thru ATM, make sure the layout of the parking is such that people don't need to drive thru where you want to set up the track to get to or from the ATM. Then call the business manager during the week and ask... or it would be even better if you could go with an adult and actually meet and talk with him with a drawing of how you'd like to set it up.

Don't dress like SK8R Boy... you wanna appear as responsible as possible.

You still might get turned down... there are insurance issues in most cases.

Guys, don't knock the "race meets in the carpark". Thats how I got started, how I'm still racing (nearest and only club here is 300 ks away).
People come and go, some race some don't, It's great to have people come and watch and show some interest.

It's hard to get a constant group of people when your just racing in a carpark but personally I don't care if I end up being the only one there, I get to race/practice, use my cars and have fun. That is after all the main objective of the whole thing. :D

My daughter comes with me (she's 9) and just to watch her face getting to race round with my t-maxx is worth it wether any else is there or not. (except at times she drives better than I do :p )

It doesn't matter where you race, just so long as your having fun doing it right?
