View Full Version : Tyres: can 'too much' grip be a bad thing?

Another interesting point: my car (Kyosho nitro, 200 mm) is 4 wheel drive, and I recently went ahead and purchased an HPI porsche 911 shell and new tyres to race on road and replace the ones it came with. I got (at the store owner's recommendation) soft slicks for the front and super soft slicks for the rear. NOW I get amazing grip for accelerationand braking, but because the car is so sticky to the road, the turning circle has increased dramatically at higher speeds. (Before these tyres I was turning sharp by using 'controlled drift' of the rear end) Is this a normal trade off - acceleration grop for handling? should I switch the front and rear tyres over, to give the steering wheels more grip? Help me Obi - Wan Kenobi!

Maybe you can try narrower tires.

The tires you probably had before were too hard to perform well and get good traction so it tended to slide. Even though it was sliding the setup had some push in it to make it easy to drive. When you put the sticky tires on it the slide went away so the push in the car came out in full force. You will need to make a few setup changes to get the car to turn better and you will be running much faster laps.

The higher your bite, the more sway bars will help. This is in general terms of course ... your mileage may vary. Always wear your seatbelt. This was posted on a closed course using a professional writer.
