Pics are nice, but howzabout a little INFO? C'mon OFNA, you're gonna make us guess, aren't you. Ok, Hyper fans, give us the lowdown while I dig out my TQ kit for a comparo...

UPDATE, latest OFNA press info:

Looks like OFNA is trying to go low, low, low with this new design--just check out the stepped-on air filter for proof! And love it or not, ya gotta give props for the unique body design and devil-horns wing--you can't cry "copy" with this buggy.

metalry101
08-22-2005, 02:20 PM
Agreed. They were definately trying to keep it low. That air filter is nuts! Good to see someone thinking outside of the box in 1/8. It doesn't seem to happen very often.

ya pretty nice-except its the ugliest body and wing EVER! i do like the air-filter. Fioroni style but i bet it wont cost me $70!

I actually really like the body. It kinda reminds me of the Pagani Zonda with that bubble cabin and such. Very cool.

Gotta love old-school Tamiya...and Tamiya names. Saint Dragon???? That's just odd. I definately do see the similarities between the two bodies, but I think the Ofna one is better looking.

PeterV
08-22-2005, 02:40 PM
Sav, surely there have been uglier RC cars (see some of the other old Tamiya buggies at TamiyaClub. Like the Big Wig!) :)

It's weird-lookin, but I like the stand-out factor. No one is going to say, "What is that, an Inferno?" And if it starts winning races, it'll really look good. Everything looks good in first place...

That side shot with the body on is awesome. That's definately the sweetest buggy body ever. The buggy itself looks pretty sweet, but that's about all I can comment on really since my knowledge of buggies is rather limited.

I think OFNA had performance in mind when they built this body not the looks. You guys are complaining about the bubble canopy, but with the cabin that far forward, look how much the airflow to the engine is improved! On most buggy bodies, only the top few fins of the heat sink poke through the lexan. Also I think its hard to tell from the picture, but with the new style airfilter I think the body is really really low!

Other than that, I really wish OFNA would give us some statistics on this thing. I'm sure there are dozens of smaller improvements over the hyper 7, but its hard to pic those things out in a picture; epecially if you don't have a hyper 7 right next to the new model.

Where do you see the complaining? I LOVE that body. The bubble canopy is awesome. I even compared it to a half million dollar, super limited production Italian super car. I don't think praise gets much better than that.

Paul Coleman has raced this buggy at ARC racing in Murrieta CA

I pitted for him the other night. Its a fine car, there are still a few changes that Paul wants before it goes into full production.

Its hard to tell how good the car is, because Paul drives everything good.

From what Ive seen, I like it and will most likely buy one.

I will definitely buy that buggy...if it is in reason 400 to 500...I wonder if that O.S. V-Spec will be on it when the public buys it....probably not...

I like the side-flip tank. Also, there's a video of the buggy in action at the OFNA site, but I couldn't get it to work. Anybody else?

Here is some more pictures, and also some specs:
http://www.cmldistribution.co.uk/news.php?id=148&type=CAR

From what i have heard, the basic-model of the Hyper-8 should be in hobby shops around christmas, while the Pro-model should be available in spring 2006.
Oh,and if you don't like the body, don't worry.Hyper-7's body is direct fit, according to some HoBao (or Ofna,as you yankees like to say :p ) race drivers.

not a huge fan of the flip side tank - despite that being the proper side to fuel on, if any track runs the other way thats going to cause a problem.

What the heck is up with the front brace? It looks like an OFNA Ultra LX Comp front brace except all metal. Big chunk on the bottom and then it arcs up to the top brace.

the wing definitely looks different and i'm pretty positive that its just cosmetic with the extravagant side spoilers.

not a fan of the air filter - doesn't seem to be necessary.

i think i'm gonna like the Receiver box. looks like just one body clip holds it down and it folds up.

I wonder if the tank will kill o-ring because the lid is on an angle like the revo.
I wonder witch has lower C.O.G This or the new CL-1 storm
I could do without the elf ears on the wing, but the body looks great IMO

I love that body. That combined with the wing makes it look absolutely sinister. Imagine a custom paint job, it'd look like hell breaking loose....:D

BTW, is it just me or does the engine look like it's mounted more towards the center and back of the buggy?

PeterV,

OFNA didnt have low in mind, and no props to OFNA. Lets give HoBao the props they deserve for this buggy, and Hong Nor props for the Jammin'. They are the companies that are delivering these awesome buggies. No one gave props to Great Planes for the MP7.5 and 777 buggies before Kyosho went solo. A distributor is a distributor.

If you're bored of the "same old thing" in 1/8's and have a "radical" new idea, why aren't you building it, or selling your idea to a company?

1/8's may be boring because they're all the same, but if you can't design something better then you probably shouldn't be knocking it.

That looks really nice. There's no real 1/8th buggy racing here...but this just may have me convinced to buy one anyway. The body is kinda Zondaish. I think it looks pretty Secsi

PeterV - You should look up a picture of the Zonda in black...and then go to www.racingflix.com and find the Top Gear video of the Zonda. It's pretty awesome.

Or find the Zonda roadster vid, which is even better. It's such a fabulous car. I have the entire episode with the Roadster in it (along with about 40 other episodes :D), and I have the 10 minute or whatever review of the hardtop Zonda. It's such a cool car, and it's just gorgeous. BTW, if you haven't heard of Top Gear before, DL Limewire or some other file sharing program and do a search for it. DL every episode you can. They're not small, at 350 megs apiece, but they're an hour long, with no commercials, and there has never been a better TV show, ever, period.

Wow I guess your right. Ofna is better. In honor of the release of the Hyper 8 they are replacing it for the Hyper 8 PBS, which will then be superceeded by the Hyper 8 pcr edition, and if your not happy yet they have a TQ conversion kit for the hyper 8 to change it more. LOL
Ya, Ofna is much better at not releasing millons of different cars

Because there are rules for that class like for every other class.

That means that the basic layout for a car or buggy is a given and every designer is getting closer to the optimum within these rules, ergo, the cars will become more and more the same.

Look at F1, paint all these different cars in white and you'll have a hard time telling them apart

Agreed. They were definately trying to keep it low. That air filter is nuts!

I like that filter and wonder if it clear my MBX-5 body. I'm tired of having my existing RB filter rub all the paint off. Probably much more affordable than the Fioroni filter which has a similar design and retails for over $70.

The swoopy body is quite nice too, I think it's rather different and applaud the designers for thinking outside the typical 1/8 buggy design.

Here is some pictures:

xray have the xb8/xb8r..one is a better version of the other.
kyosho have the 777 plus the S1 and S2.
TT have S3 and are releasing a newer version next year so say?
only hobao seem to be bringing in RTR's?

Hi Flying Finn, can I ask who is giving this info to you ??Sure,a Finnish HoBao-dealer,who contacted the HoBao factory. It's fresh info, came out yesterday. He is the owner of HoBao Finland (www.hobao.fi),the same hobby shop that had those pictures of the Hyper-8 above.

PS: His certainly not giving this info only to me,he is sharing this info among all Finnish RC-hobbyers on one Finnish RC-forum.And i think he's a quite reliable guy, because his source is the HoBao factory in Taiwan, like i said earlier. If for some reason this new info is false, please, don't shoot the messenger ;)

Price is 545 euros, about 640$.That's little bit more expensive than the Hyper-7 Pro in Finland. But i'd guess that it is going to be cheaper than that in the States.

Flying Finn

Couple of things i've heard so far:
-In Finland, the customers who have made a pre-order should get their Hyper-8's before Xmas.Dunno what's the deal in other countries?
-Unlike they planned, the pipe does not have EFRA number on it,because of the recent rule changes EFRA made.Race legal pipes need to have 3-chambers,instead of two.The guy who owns the Hyper-8 in those pics is not happy at all about that rule change.I could write his comments about that here, but i think language like that could get me in trouble :D .If i'm correct, this rule should kick-in already next year. This is what i've heard anyway.
-Hyper-8 Pro does indeed come 80% pre-built.The guy says that it has been built very well,thread-lock has been used.Parts fit together like a dream. However,he suspects that diffs have been filled with grease, instead of diff-oil.Changing them is a "must" for racers.Shocks haven't been built.
-Oh,and one more thing about the price. In here the price went up about 10% from the price of the best Hyper-7 kit available here (it's called "DTQ Pro",and i haven't seen it in shops anywhere but Finland). So if you add those 10% to the price of the, lets say PCR Pro,you should get a "about-price" of the Hyper-8 Pro.

New and better pics should be coming soon.I will post them here.

This is indeed correct, the RRP for the Hyper8 Pro-UK in the UK is going to be £349.99. There is a slim chance that a few may make it to UK shops just before Christmas, however the likelyhood is that they will be available after the Christmas period around Mid-January.

Flying Fin can you ask about the weight of the pro car (w/out any options)?

Flying Finn
01-04-2006, 04:47 PM
They did weigh it once, but it was with a prototype body that was twice as thick compared to the production body. The result also included engine, servos and so on...
Anyway,the car weighted 3400g.

At the moment they don't have proper scale,so the "dry-weight" is unknown.

I cannot wait for this buggy to come out!!! Im a true Ofna fan and have owned every single hyper out there. I currently have a PCR Pro and a CRT Pro from Ofna. I am awaiting the Hyper 8 for my 3rd buggy (4th if you count the XXX4....but it is electric).

I allready have everything for the pro kit. I have the servos, the OS .21 Vspec, bump start, and a JP-2 pipe. All I need is the buggy.

Tower and Horizon are listing the buggy now fs. Their prices and also release dates do not match. Horizon is more expensive but says it will be released in march. tower is cheapest and says april. Does anyone know when it will be released???

Also, for tower, they have a different pic of the hyper as opposed to on the ofna site. It looks different and awesome!!! It looks alot better than the prototype (which is the one that P.C. is running and that is why it is being pictured with a OS Vspec, pcr pipe, and futaba servos....come on!!! I mean really!!! Ofna is going to offer this thing out with a plastic pipe and a force engine!!! the good stuff has to be bought seperately! the crt was the same way! pictured with the vspec and then the day the rtr was released those were changed to a force .28) with the white wing, shocks, and tires.

I was on a pre order list at Nitrohouse for several weeks ... Got a call as the truck was unlaoding ... I work 3 miles from OFNA :-)

Ho Bao shipped 100 units to OFNA - nitrohouse got 10 and the big distribs got the rest ... after this initial batch of 100 - they big bulk of them will roll in end of march or so .. as im hearing.

Call ultimate, a main and check towers for a pre order list ... bearing in mind there is only 90 units out in the North American world till end of March.

Car looked like it was stuggling a little for grip, but the track didn't look like it held much. Overall though it did look impressive, especially over the bumps. It was quite clear that there was a sensible driver behind the transmitter though, which plays a bigger part in anything than the car does.
