View Full Version : How tight should my spur gear & pinion gear fit together?

I just replaced my motor in my Duratrax EVADER bx. I want to know how tight I should have my spur gear & pinion gear together?
I thought I saw a pic online with a sliver of paper between the 2 gears to get the teeth of each gear correctly spaced. Was I dreaming this up?
Will having the spur & pinion gears too tight together damage anything?

you were'nt dreaming, the paper method is a good guage. Typically you want a slight amount of slop when setting up gear mesh, with no load on the rear drivetrain you should hear a slight clicking while rocking the spur gear back and forth against the pinion.
If you get them to close together you can/will overheat the electronics and/or melt the spur from excessive friction.
Hope this helps.

Yes.A strip of thin paper works great.Just make sure you have a little back-lash after torquing bolts.

If your fingers are too big to fiddle with the paper, it's a lot easier to just adjust it so it has a little "wiggle." Hold the pinion with one finger, then rock the spur a little. It should not be too loose, but loose enough so you can feel a little wiggle. Rotate the spur 90° at a time and check it all the way 'round.

Ya Bil but the paper helps keep a clearance when you torque the bolts.Gets it right the first time!

The vehicles manual should show how to install spur gear, steps vary with the different types of vehicle.
Normally after installing motor and pinion I rotate spur with thumb to tell difference in amount of resistance. Sometimes after during all the other inbetween rounds maintain the sheet of paper method takes too long. So by visual inspection the gap between spur & pinion teeth then feeling the amount of resistance is a good indicator when mesh is correct. It may also indicate if the spur is out of round or if teeth may be worn, feeling may be the same in all but one area.
