Go to your LHS and but a 40watt soldering iron with a tip that looks like a wedge. It is made by Weller and is red, it has a black grip right before the iron part. I've had this for 2 years, left it on all day, torchered it, and only had to replace the actual screw on tip once. Also Radio Shack sells this $12 stand that is unassembled, it is a black base, silver spring to hold it in, and a black kind of cover at the top, and also has a sponge in it. That has worked for a LONG time and a lot of torchure tests [(like leaving it on for 28 hours one day) (I forgot about it being on, oops!] It does eveything and I dont need anything else. Ive never seen any of them burn out, or anything, but if you want the best (also $20) without much of a difference get a Hakko. I have seen like 8 of them burned out, and thats why I wont buy it, but the make some SWEEETTTT! Soldering stands that will last longer than earth. Hope this helps.

I agree with JP, I have one of those as my back up....it always works.

But I also feel that soldering is an important part of getting ready to race, how many times have you seen someone fall out of a race because their solder joint failed? You get what you pay for. If your in school, see if you can get your science teacher to get you one of those scientific, light blue solderg irons.

Take the bad parts to Radio Shack. You may be able to replace them for only a couple of bucks.
