wanted to throw this idea at you guys.....
does anybody else (beside me ) let your engine warm up on land before start blasting the boat in the water?
I guess I just have this " warming up " habbit same with my car/ bike.
I take a gallon milk jug , which has a hole drilled at the bottom a small diam plastic hose showed in it.
fill it up with lake water , and hook the hose to the water pickup , and i let it idle or a while , allowing it to warm up. this give me some time to do some minor checking of thing on the boat . servos , and other tweaking.
having a clutch on my gas boat is an added benefit so there is no spinning prop to worry about

Nope. :D
It warms up on the way to the water and tossed in. Give a few more seconds & go to town. (total time about a minute). No problems after three seasons on the RC230.

ahhhh......
no warm up= rapid thermal expansion,
it is a nightmare for dissimular metals like aluminum brass coper, and other nickel /chrome metals found in the engines.
I am NOT saying it will cut your engines life in half , but sure don't help it.
I believe it is a good practice, wanted to see if anybody else does it?

yeah I do It. before I race I get a couple of warm-up laps to get the engine and tires warmed up. and yellow- Hydro is right rapid expansion isn't good for engines. thats why I don't like that new WOT break in method. but thats just years of experience and being around the pros talking. :D every time you just run your engine without warming it up It displaces some of the Ions In your engines piston, sleve and crank losing performance slowly but faster than if you would have warmed it up first.

I may be wrong, but aren't the gas engines ringed? In that case you would not have any problems. As far as the rapid thermal expansion goes, that's what you want on ABC nitro engines. They are fitted at operating temperature, so the longer they spend at low temperature, the more wear they get.

How long do you think it takes for one of these to get warm inside? Less than a minute at idle / just above is fine.

optimal operating temp on other gas engines like cars and bikes, is 195F full size boat run at 175F +- , not sure what it is for RC engines.
ideal would be to get it to its operating temp gradually.
I would say a minute or two.
it does not mean you have to sit there with your tumb up*********** :) for that time :)
there is always other thinks to do when you got some toy RCs around , check rudder positioing, servo throw end limits, loose bolts and nuts , loose exhaust , proper water flow thru the water lines, water leaks , from the hoses, exhaust leaks , fuel leaks.....you know hat I mean.if there is nothing else to do than I gues dunk down a bottle o' beer :)

Some nitro engines run better with a little warming up. The K&B SS's, the Keeley headed engines and the Rossi's all run better if the engine is warmed up a little before launching.
SBoy, I hope that you aren't breaking in motors by running them WOT unless you like replacing them!
Yellow, with the milk jug you really aren't warming up the motor as it is still being water cooled. I use an adapter that I made up that hooks to a garden hose for firing up the engines at home and run it only enough to where the exiting water is warm. This method I use to get new engines fired up and the carb adjusted. I bypass the water pickup and plug directly into the head, that way the prop doesn't have a chance to eat up my cooling line.

ROn,
yes I am warming it up , my engine is air cooled, not water cooled ,
I only run the water thru it to cool the exhaust "O" rings and to keep it from burning up .
the water pick up on the boat only cools exhaust parts,(O ring by the exhaust flange and O rings at the header/muffler conection)
I start mine. Let it idle on land for about 30 sec. Throw it in the water and putt around on plane not WFO for about a min. and give her all shes got.

IF you read my post properly it says that I opose the new break in method that tells you to wide open throttle for sometime. Just had to clear my name I wouldn't want no little kid gettin no ideas :) Im old fashioned and if it ain't broke don't fix it. believe me I know how to break in an engine. and it doesn't include w.o.t.

I'd like to know who is dumb enough to do a WOT break-in. I know that if you asked 100 people how to break in an engine you might get 100 different answers but you know as well as I do that WOT isn't the way to do it.
I said that I hope that you aren't breaking them in running them WOT, not that you are.

Break in for any engine (how I've always heard it) includes varying the speed a lot, and starting by going no more than about 2/3 throttle and gradually increasing as it gets more broken in. I've never heard of WOT break in (and imho, it would be completely stupid to break in an engine at wot)
How many of you break in your weed wacker???:D When I got my new one, I just went to town on those weeds:D

ok, break in for any PERFORMANCE engine :D

which weed wacker you got EJP ? the $89 ryobi or the $200 fancy?
a badly neglected weed wacker will still operate and cut "weed" .
My aprx. 10 year (originally refurbished )old ryobi still screams like crazy, and I've been using the cheapest 2 cycle walmart brand oil in it.
I do let it warm up , but don't recall breaking it in.
they were boken in at the factory.
oh, mines an eager beaver 32cc. Its all performance:D

ah, you got me beaten... mine is only 31 cc.... may be?
I use caster 927 in mine as well as everything else that is two stroke. 22.00 a gallon:D It smells like burnt cow hide:D :D Oh, well I didn't do do the break in, my dad did, I was only like 7 at the time:D Ours is old but still has way good compression and its a beast, 32CC'S!!!!!!:D

well since we are on weed wackersmine is a homie weedeater that only runs after its been warmed up if i just start it and go to town it bogs out and dies so i let it run on my long walk to the front yard (2 acres of land at my house) and i did not break it in i just fired it up let it run for a minite and went kung fu crazy on some weeds :D
