Hey guys,

Im not sure where this came from, maybe its been done before, but I was wondering, Is there a possibility to have a Nitro engine and an electric motor functioning together in the same chassis?

I know it might be heavy, but Im just looking for opinons as if its possible, Im intending to design it in CAD and see what i can come out with, I have a CNC accesible to me, all I would need is your opinions to see if its possible, and how.

Thanks For all your support

One question; why? There's no class you could race it in... and the reason for hybird full-size cars is for conserving fossil fuels... surely that's not your motive.

I know, I just like to try doing things in my freetime (LIKE SUMMER??) so I thought it could be possible, just for fun really, i like inventing and building and doing mechanical stuff, and have access to professional design and manufacturing tools, and all the time in the world, so WHY NOT?

Who cares if there is no point to it.. its cool though... getting a radio to switch over like that would be tough..

i meant in any chassis, land air, or land, space whatever, could they funcion together?

of course it's possible. well the simplest approach would be to buy a hybrid full size car and add radio controls to it.

Traxxas uses a hybrid based sytem in its boats. I believe it is called the RTS system or something along those lines meaning "return to shore" Basically all it does is allow you drive the boat back to you with an electric motor in the event that the nitro motor stalls. Its actually a decent idea.

I would actually use it for different applications on land, like to work together to move he vehicle, some type of special drivetrain would have to be made, right?

Maybe use the nitro motor as an actuator to power the electric one? That would be completely contradictory, but it could work..

I don't think the power systems are small enough yet fit anything but a 1/5th scale. Notwalkingblind, that is not always the case. Yes,using an electric motor with a gas engine will help milage, small car companies like Honda are using hybrid technology to increase power and performance while keeping their current line of engines

If you're not looking for the best performing vehicle you could put a non-advanced-timing motor on the opposite side of the spurgear, then you just need the circuit that let's you choose between elec-power and battery charge...

Do a 'real' hybrid. A nitro engine running at its most efficient/powerful speed turning a generator/alternator which feeds elecrticity to an electric motor. Thats how diesel-electric locomotives and large construction equipment work.

The theoretical benefit is that you can run the nitro motor at its most efficient or powerful speed all the time without worrying about gear ratios for acceleration and clutch setting etc. No worry about how fast it can spool up etc.. In reality, it probably won't work that way though.

I've wrote on this idea a couple times in here. I think its an excellent idea and here are some things to chew on.

Electric motors make all their torque at 0 to low rpms. Nitro motors make their torque at high rpms. If you want to be in the power band all the time, make a hybrid. Electric and Nitro would have very complimentary dyno graphs.

Next up, its sooo easy to do. Take an 8th scale buggy. Drop the radio tray off the right and mount a nice lecto motor there. Make the top plate big enough to throw a 6 cell GP pack. Use a Y harness to power both the throttle servo and an ESC at the same time. Hit full throttle and both the electric and nitro would give it their all.

You get to keep all your functions, get the top end speed of a nitro along with the powerhouse hole shot of electric.

thats all I needed, i think, but it sounds Too easy....

Ive been thinking, and there would need to be some kind of torwue converter to use both electric and nitro power simultaneously? Right?

Hey why don't you desing a nitro car/truck that uses a small electric generator , like a stator, to charge the rx pack as you go for non-stop runtime?

hook a genorater to the nitro motor and power the electric one

wow, great ideas, well, first i have to research how exactly a generator works.

I do not plan to work on it any longer. Heat issues came up and it would require more fans and such for me to deal with. I had it free running and mid throttle, that was the only big step it made.

you can get a 12volt bicycle genorater and put a gear on it to power the electric motor

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't a generator basicly the same as an electrical motor? If you turn the shaft on the motor you should get power from the motor leads?
