Hey guys im looking into getting my first RC car and I'd like to get some of your advice. Should I go for touring or off-road?
(name specific cars if you want)

A great fist car would be the traxxas rustler or team associated rc10 t3 rtr. They are both ready to run. All you need is a battery(s) and a charger. The rustler WILL be more durable. If you get the rustler, get the one with the esc (electronic speed control), it costs only 30 bucks more and it will be a life saver!

Go with touring. You can always race electric touring. Its hard to find an indoor off-road track, but Trackside in Milwaukee does. Touring cars are fun and there are a ton of people who race them. Try a Team Associated TC3, Losi XXX-S
or a HPI Pro 3. Get in and HAVE FUN!!!!!

The reason why I say off-road is because you can run them anywhere, but on-road you have to go to a ssssmmmooottthhh paved area where there are NO real cars.

I think it all depends on what you plan on doin. Racing or backyard bashing. Do you have a parking lot availible for touring cars? Do you have a nice backyard for a truck or buggy? What do they race there? How big is the turnouts? Go to a local hobbyshop and ask them. Then go out and watch the races yourself to see what you like. Then pick your budget and go from there! ;)

Sorry bout all the questions but I just gotta keep 'em coming. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of both touring and off-road assuming that the neccesary environments for both kinds of driving are available?

i think that off road is a little more forgiving with setups than tourers, the slightest problem on tc's are sometimes very noticeable and hard to fix. off roads are realy designed well and show right out of the box! :)

Touring cars are cleaner than Off-Road. You may pick up alot of dust. But with Off-Road, you pick up alot of Mud. I'd have to agree to a certain point about set-ups, but Touring Cars was very well designed as well and can show right out of the box too! :) Hmmm both cars crash, so neither would have an advantage/disadvantage. Hmmm you can have much cooler bodies with Touring Cars!!! :D

My reply: ROTFLMFAO!

I definitely agree that either of these vehicles make excellent first (or 2nd or 3rd) RC cars AND both are pretty durable BUT put any AE vehicle up against any Traxxas vehicle (in the same class) and I'll break the Traxxas car first every time!

As far as on-road vs. off-road: It's really all about what you think will be more fun or what type of areas you have to drive these vehicles. I'm heavily into off-road so of course that's what I suggest,... also, as others have poited out, you can drive an offroad car in the dirt or in the street,... or on the carpet! You are more limited with an onroad car.

Either choice will be fun so do what I do - plan to own both eventually! :D

good luck

It would have to be personal opinion. I personally would rather have an off-road car for a first car. You can drive them anywhere, and if you seal you electronics you can run them in the winter, which wouldnt a problem in Arizona, but here in South Dakota, my TC3 becomes part of my family room decor sitting on my tv during the winter months.

what is the handling like with a tc? does the back end fishtail in turns or is it more precise or both?

You can fishtail ANY car. On or offroad. So saying a TC will fish-tail in a turn is not a very good statement. This comes all down to tuning and setups. It can also some down to power also. I can make it look like it's on rails. Or I can make it slip and slide everywhere I go. I may also depend on the track surface as well. With my Off-road truck it can fishtail all day long at the track (if I wish) when it's dusty. But on race day they wet it down and it becomes muddy. The Touring car is the same. If the parking lot is dusty, then it can slide everywhere.

Also, some Touring cars are well sealed and can be "upgrade" to become a Rally car. So you can drive on both on and off road as well. The Losi StreetWeapon, HPI, Associated, Tamiya, and Yokomo make these kinds of cars. (did I forget any?) And with that you get better bodies!! :D

what do u guys think of the triple-XT matt francis edition?

RoAdRaSh909,

The Francis edition XXX-T is an awesome truck! I have a TripleX-T and the truck rules! With the box stock set up it handles extremely well. It flies flat and low over jumps and bumpy straights don't upset it's straight line handling. I would recommend this truck to anyone. Now that there is a 'fully loaded' version of this truck, there is just one more reason to go Losi! The Francis edition truck should be a very good value for all you get,... in fact, I might just buy one instead of buying hop ups for mine :D

If you're looking at stadium trucks, you should also look at the AE Factory Team T3. This is another 'fully loaded' vehicle that has all the goodies you would want. The quality is great and parts are easy to get (at least in my area). I would check out both vehicles and buy the truck that is easiest to get parts for. This is advice you will see often on these forums since there are so many good vehicles to choose from ;)

good luck
Jay

When I started in RC, i I got a T3. I managed to find an off-road track, but it was 45 minutes away, and there were no dirt lots around. So i raced it occasionally but really had no room to "play" with it. Thats why im getting a tc3, small neighborhood, not too many cars, a tc track 10 minutes away (indoors) and whats beatiful about the tc3 is if you get tired of it (which you never will but still) you can buy the rally conversion for 50$ to make it into a rally car!
