View Full Version : Is my Boat too RICH? Quick Nitro Question

I'm attaching a picture of what collects on my hydro's wing after running it. It seems to be excess nitro fuel that comes out of the tuned pipe. I'm assuming I need to lean out the motor some more, but am scetchy on doing this. For one thing, I don't know to lean out the low speed or high speed adjustment. The boat seems to run fine, but maybe it's capable of more if she's mis-tuned.

Please Help Me!

Oil gets all over everything, it's one of those things that happens. Don't mess with the low-speed needle but you can work with the high-speed. Do it a little at a time, the factory settings are rough as where you live and the weather conditions determine it's setting.

So is this normal then? Or do I need to mess with the carb setting?

Some oil is normal. Some of it gets saved in the pipe after running amd will run out or will really come out once it's refired. This is showing that you are getting adequate lubrication. Your engine will let you know if it needs to be richer or leaner. Too lean, it will die out or run too hot. Too rich and you won't get the speed, see too much smoke or hear it want to go leaner if it's close. That will sound like it's breaking up at high speed.

The electric R/C airplane people commonly call glow (nitro) planes "slimers". I carry a spray bottle of Simple Green to deslime my planes when I'm done flying. Boats are easier since the pipe directs much of the slime away from the hull.

OK, cool. I feel better now.

this maybe a bit late for an answer , but the oil on the wing is normal , mine does /did the same thing.
if you ever take your pipe off, and look inside you will see lots of oil depositing inside.
this is true for nitro and for 2 storkes gas enignes.

the reason you get the oil deposited because the manufacture installed this pipe in a goofy way by drilling 2 holes in the end of the pipe to feed a mounting screw and a screw driever throuhg the pipe.
not only it spray oil / exhaust gas out the top hole but the mounting screw head also disrupts the exhaust flow( which may not be a big deal)

I ditched the screw and installed a full circle hose clamp type stainless mounting piece.
the clamp it self will seal /close off the 2 factory holes on your exhaust pipe, you will never see oil on the wings.

a picture worth a 1000 word. NO oil on the wing.
plus an other free tip: put a nylon sting through a drain plug and you will never leave your drain plug at home again.
the rest is secret .....:-) hee-heee
