Wow, a Maxxum. How much did they give you to take it away? LOL

It's a Kyosho Maxxum, a FWD buggy they released in the late 1980s as some sort of experiment. I guess a few homemade FWD buggies ran fairly well in Japan, but those were very unorthodox-looking machines, not basically a 2WD buggy run backwards.

It didn't last long for various reasons. The weight balance made it awkward to jump, the lack of a rear wing meant it didn't track well, which was compounded by the primitive tranny and diff and tire compounds of the day that meant lots of wheelspin on loose surfaces.

I don't know what the value would be, I guess you might get lucky and find a Kyosho collector who really wants it. Being that it's been OOP for about 15 years, it isn't really much good as a runner because it could be a while before you find spares.

Sorry, got distracted while I was editing my post.

Tamiya has had FWD touring cars for many years now, and Kyosho has even made some nitro-powered FWD touring cars (With Peugeot 306 and Renault Megane bodies I would kill for now).

The Maxxum may have been the first one overall, pre-dating the Tamiya cars by about 4 years. It's the only FWD off-road car I know about, and frankly I don't know why Kyosho even attempted that.

Well, there certainly isn't the market for it that vintage Tamiya cars have, but you might get lucky. You could give ebay a shot, but I wouldn't expect hundreds of dollars for it. Might be more interesting to clean up and keep on the shelf, occasionally pulling out for a run.

well, what i would do is keep an eye on ebay for a maxxum and see what they are bringing price wise. if you see a price that entices you to sell it, do it. otherwise, you've got a cool, somewhat obscure piece of rc history to goof around with. like steve k said, it's not a great handling buggy for the track but i'm sure it would be cool to bash around with as long as you don't get to extreme with it as spares are hard to come by now....

Nichimo made a FWD buggy too around the same time as the Maxxum. I've seen used examples go for 50-60 bucks on ebay. But that was a while back...probably over a year. RCCA did a review of this car and they didn't like it as it didn't accelerate very well. I think it shares a few parts with the Optima/Ultima series of cars.

I still have a Maxxum and I've seen new in box ones go for over $200.00. Used ones usually bring about $50-70 or more depending on condition. Kyosho made the car to run in 4WD classes but you were suppose to have the advantage of only being 2WD. In stock form the car kind of stinks but my car has full ball bearings, An Ultima Pro ball differential and 48 pitch gear conversion in it, universal shafts, Kyosho gold shocks, Lazer ZX-R rims with bigger tires than the stock ones and a wing. Most parts off a Optima Mid like the front shock tower and suspension parts are interchangeable. And a Optima Mid rear spoiler mount will bolt on and was also made for the Maxxum. The only parts you would have a difficult time finding would be rear suspension arms because I don't think they made a system like that on any other car then. I think the body was off a Turbo Optima but I could be wrong. I'm having a hard time finding one to put on my car now.

yard sales r awesome, back when i was 16ish,lol i bought a "new" radio shack golden arrow for 8 bucks,no lie!the lady said her son like used it once n it stopped working,it was sooo new ity had the little nipples on the tires when they are new,but the kid spray painted the body purple. my neighbor fixed it in like 2 minutes,1 wire was broken and after that it ran perfect, drove that thing to the tires litterly blew of the rims, lol wish i still had it!
