I have a few sport 3000 nimh stick packs. Is it safe to dissassemble them and solder them back together in side by side configuration? Will I get a performance boost by doing this? The battery packs are Epic 3000s and 1 Promax 3000.

Do not do it man

Why not? When i first started i purchased stick packs, but wanted to convert them to side by side so they would sit lower in the chassis and so i could use a discharge tray. Without all the xtra heat shrink the cells stay cooler and last longer because i am able to tray them. As far as a performance boost goes, you won't see much of a boost, but your cells will last much longer if you can look after them better.

the cells in most stick packs are crappy i would not put much time or effort into them. But yes you can do it.

What are some good side by side packs/cells for around $30-40? They will be used for modified racing. What's the best way to reassemble stick packs into side by side?

promatch racing has some unmatched packs for $33 GP3300's

Personaly, I would just use what you have unchanged. Put deans plugs on them if you havent already. Save your money for a Decent matched GP3300 or possible a matched GP3700. If you dont have one already a Decent Peak charger. Get one good battery and save up for your next one. I have a Matched GP3300 and a unmatched 2400mah stick pack and there is a HUGE difference between the to.

I've already got a good peak charger and I'm using deans plugs. I also just bought a Trinity Sanyo 3600 stick pack (http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/841280.asp) that's unused. I can return it and use that money for a matched pack, unless you guys think this will work for modified 4wd buggy racing.

Dang thats cheap, $20 for a 3600mah sanyo cells. I am not into RC as much as i used to be but that looks odd to me. It may not be matched but you cant beat the price.

also does your track let you use 3600's?

At my track they are more into nitro. Until the electrics become more popular they just put all electric cars in one class. So I don't think they'll have a problem with 3600s.

Can anyone else tell me something about these Trinity batteries?

Which Trinity batteries? The last time I used trinity batteries was with Sanyo 2400 matched VIS packs and they were good for their time.

Generally, I recommend SMC batteries. They match competitive cells for all levels of racing.

The pack I'm talking about is the one shown in the link 4 posts up from yours.

There is nothing wrong with the packs you have. Epic and Promatch packs will be decent, even if they are not matched. Yes matched packs will be better, but if you have not been racing for a while, there is no point getting matched packs right away.

Save your money and buy the tools necessary to setup your car and look after your batteries. Make sure you have a good charger, discharger and equalizing tray before you waste money on matched packs. If you cannot look after them correctly, you just wasted your money.

Matched packs may make you slightly quicker a lap, but if you cannot complete an entire race without being marshalled, you might as well save your money and spend it tires/motors/tools.

Alright. I'll get some new tires first. What are some decent dischargers and equalizers that don't cost too much?

What is your peak charger? It may have a good discharge function. If not, there are a couple discharge trays on the market that will discharge at a 30/20 amp discharge rate. These may be the best way to go. I don't have all the details on these trays, but i believe they are made by Integy/duratrax.

Maybe someone else can comment on these trays or other good trays for discharging/maintaining batteries?

My charger is a Wattage Charge-it-all sport charger. It works very good for charging my packs, but it doesn't have a discharger.

Hey Guys,

Check out this site. http://www.balakracing.com/

It has some very helpful guides on building battery packs and why you would want to convert from stick packs. They also have articles on battery maintenance you may want to check out.
