I what to dye some Traxxas chrome Hurricanes. Instead of stripping them I want to try to use black over the chrome to make a graphite color. Any thoughts?

Thanks you made my day! I know search. Now I can dye my Hurricanes and mount my Response tires up for tomorrows race. We will be styling!

When using dye over chrome, be sure to dye it darker than you expect it to look, especially with black. The black is purple based and will fade to purple, especially if you don't leave the wheels in the dye bath long enough. I have some pictures of mine on RC Pics (http://www.******.net/member/kitty). I didn't make the dye bath strong enough (not enough powder) and the first time I got Simple Green on the wheels, bam, purple rims. They looked great while it lasted, though. Good luck!

Well my rims looked awesome. Nice deep graphite color. Except one problem they chipped just by touching them with my fingernail. I ended up stripping them down and just dying them black. :(

Did they chip when they were fully dried following the dyeing process? The last time I dyed some rims, I found that if I touched the dyed area too soon afterwards, especially while rinsing them, they would do that. Some chrome rims seem to flake when heated like that too. Cheap paint, I guess. Bummer that you had to strip yours and go with plain black dye. At least you have some new black wheels though, right? =)
