View Full Version : Why purple??

I've always wondered this....why are so many of our aluminum aftermarket parts made (anodized) in purple? Is this a color that most R/C people like/prefer? Are there a lot of women out there in the R/C world that is orchestrating the invasion of purple parts?

I'm not a big fan of purple myself (if you couldn't tell)...why not green, or red, or yellow, or...? I try to find Blue anodized parts, but with my new Savage, I see a few places that sell Savage parts in purple, exclusively...

WHY SO MUCH PURPLE?!?

I can't stand it...I would never let a purple part touch any of my RC's! And the only yellow and green parts out there are powder coated. (I got some yellow aluminum bumpers for my maxx :D) Blue is the best looking, imo.

Ive had a all blue aluminum truck and a all purple aluminum car. Now I am making my Jato red aluminum. Red is hard to find too. Blue is getting old but so many parts come in blue.

I just won an auction for some billet red aluminum shocks for my Jato. $40 bucks. Blue and silver set $28. This might be one of my most expensive truck unless traxxas makes some red aluminum parts which they may considering the red aluminum turnbuckles for the JATO. I hope so I need a red pipe and chassis for now. Then some dyeable rpm arms and bulkheads and ill be set.

Green may be liked by some but not liked by others. Some people may like red and other people think it looks stupid.

Everyone hates purple equally, so nobody complains.

whats wrong with purple? i think it looks good on aluminum like most of the hpi or proline stuff...but the stock mt2 chassis reminds me of tylenol or something and whatever flavor it was, i couldnt stand it. id rather endure the pain than take the tylenol..then again im not in a lotta pain right now, although my ankle has been pretty bad today..shoes...

Here is my red Jato so far. I also have these red billet shocks on the way and black rims and red fuel tubing although I like the black tubing. I am also waiting on traxxas to release the red alum turnbuckles and red tuned pipe. Then it will be sweet. Oh and my black coupler that just showed up today. I still need to put it on.

Royal blue and red are my favorite anodized colors.

And about those Jato shocks, it must be all in the geometry because I am almost positive the shocks on my ntc3 have more travel then that ;)

Losi Stealth

The Savage parts are purple because HPI seems to have a thing with purple. Its their company color, their cars are the only ones i know of that use a strong amount of purple. AE tends to use blue, Losi doesn't use much aluminum, but it is usually red or blue to match their driver color kits.

Aftermarket manufacturers seem to match the colors the companies use because its whats most likely to match whatever else a consumer may have bought for their car. Complete aluminum kits are expensive, and I don't know about you, but I can't afford to buy everything at once, and its nice to have my car match in the mean time.

I will agree that purple isn't my first choice, but seeing as my only HPI is a Micro RS4, I got rid of most of the purple with the Big Block motor plate, its blue and pretty.

And thats my opinion on why purple is used.

12mm more suspension travel than any other stadium truck. Traxxas has the suspension thing down man. This Jato handles and jumps like a dream.

Oh I see you mean the picture of the aluminum shocks. I see in the pic they have the adjusters all the way up so the shock is compressed. They might not have any oil in them.

I personally love all of the purple ano'd aluminum on my HB L2 Pro. Honestly it bugs me when i see the purple towers sticking out of someone elses HB and their body doesn't match lol.

I think any color would look pretty classy if it was set up right. I have nothing against purple and never really have because i have seen some very gorgeous R/C cars with ano'd purple aluminum.

Why aren't there more gold and yellow or green colors for alloy?
Yellow isn't a common pigment/dye used in the industry and there are a number of green pigments used. The thing is, most of the parts are done in China and they use whatever pigments they can get ahold of. I've seen some gawd awful colours used over there. The only green anodised RC stuff I've ever seen was on a prototype and it was a really dull "forest" green. I don't get it because there is a gorgeous green that is quite common in the plating/anodising industry in the US. It's a nice lime green and when a touch of yellow is added to it, produces a killer "Mountain Dew" green. I have a friend who grew up in his family's plating business and saw a computer case he did in "Dew Green." Seriously butt kicking. The few yellow pigments used are more gold looking than anything. If you've ever seen the "gold" handles used for the 3mm hex wrenches by Integy, that's almost as yellow as they make.

Purple, blue and red are the most common pigments and thus the price of them is cheaper, so that's what gets used the most, especially in parts that are done in China. I remember when a popular aluminum computer case manufacturer first tried to come out with a purple case. It was horrendous and came out like a dull orchid colour. They also tried their own green, which looked like a washed out, dull olive drab. Pretty pathetic. They must have found some really cheap pigments made overseas or something.

I think it's only a matter of time until one of the major RC manufacturers ventures into using the bright green for a vehicle. Until then, if you want something different, look in the yellow pages for plating companies in your area. Sometimes you can find one that does a lot of anodising and has various pigments on hand and can toss your parts in with a larger batch of stuff they are doing for someone/another company. Some also do electropolishing, which makes alloy parts look close to polished, or you could just have them do "clear" anodising or even have some parts chromed. If you have more than one plating place near you, check around for pricing and go down to the place(s) to see if you can get a look at their work.

<edit>
Oh yeah, purple stuff. One of my favourite colours is purple, but there's no way I want an all-purple truck. That's just too much; I like a little contrast. Plus, I like using different colours for bodies and some just don't match purple very well. My Savage currently has black TVPs (LCG/extended prototypes thanks to Paul Both) and I really like them. I've been thinking about picking up spares of the stock alloy parts for the Savage from eBay and having some reanodised in black and some chromed. That'll match any body I put on my truck =)

kitty-i know what you mean when you say you dont want an all purple truck...i think i do anyway...you know how manufacturers like powerline usually make the endges shiny...i forget what its called....chaffed or something like that...but they dont re-anodize it. when i say i like an all purple truck or car, thats how i want the aluminum...pure purple just looks bad. and yes, i like a variety too sometimes, like when im eating...small servings..a lotta servings..

If you really hate purple there are some companies that do custom stripping and anodizing. Like fbmfactory.com . They are for paintball guns but I'm sure they anodize R/C Car parts.

I meant the can colour, silly :p Technically, Mountain Dew (the soda itself) is more chartreuse.

MT owns you: I gotcha. Personally I like parts that are partially milled after anodising, leaving "bare" edges. If you want everything solid, definitely look for a good plater in your area or find a good place online (maybe check the place EvaderSTKid linked to). If you go with a place online, check to see if they have references. Same thing goes for a local shop, really, unless they'll let you see their work being peformed.

sorry kitty, i re read my post...its a little confusing...if by bare spots you mean polished aluminum, the silver stuff, thats what i meant. sorry about that. if youve ever seen JetSkiBoy77's NMT...THAT is what i like...a little bit of contrast (on his-greenishyellow and purple), but the edges of most of the aluminum are silver...like this peice http://powerlineracing.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=106 or this peice http://powerlineracing.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=107 hope thats a bit less confusing. "Personally I like parts that are partially milled after anodising" <--exactly.

Nice CAD's!

Purple is king baby! It says, "I'm a man enough to like purple, but wear black boxer shorts. You wanna make something of it?"

Seriously speaking though, I'm very found of purple. Had my ENTIRE Supermaxx custom anodized in purple. Everything (chassis, mounts, arms, shock towers, diff cases...). Something about it relaxes me. True, its not for everyone. I, for one, cannot digest blue or red parts. Very boring (IMO). Green sounds good, so does yellow. But purple does it for me.

Getting my Revo anodized in purple next.
