Try looking at the Traxxas E-Maxx ( http://www.traxxas.com )or the Team Associated RC10T3 ( http://www.rc10.com )
Just my two cents.

RC10B3, Kyosho Ultima RB, or the Team Losi XXX. Gas isn't a good idea for a newbie.

Racer, you should go to your local track where you plan to race at and find out what they sell the most. MOST places will sell cars and parts for Associated vehicles. I personally prefer Associated myself. They're excellent vehicles. If you're wanting a buggy, get a Team Associated B3. The Losi XXX is a nice car as well but the parts are more expensive and from what I HEAR, they break more often. You won't be disappointed with a B3. For a newbie though, I'd recommend the T3 which is the Team Associated electric 1/10th scale stadium truck. The trucks are a little easier to drive in my opinion and they are better for bumpy tracks. Buggies are better for smoother tracks. But like I say, I'd go out to your local track and find out what most people are racing and what your hobby shop stocks. Talk to the people out there and find out what they recommend. Watch some races with buggies and trucks and see what you would really like. Good luck! Matt

Are you comfortable with the wrench? Then get an Associated/Losi buggy or truck.
If you aren't too comfortable with the wrench, I'd go with the Duratrax Evader ST Ready-To-Run. It's packed with tons of features for an incredibly low price. The Evader is extremely competetive at the novice/stock level.

get an RTR. since youre starting from scratch, youll save a few $ when you get the combo. for electric, get a couple more battery packs so youll spend more time running during the day.

DUDE he's just a beginner WHY does he need a factory team car when he's just beginning its like 100 big ones more!!
and an e-maxx is friggin expensive why do you want to drive away new racers by telling them to buy a 350 dollar truck!!!
dude if youre bashing get kyosho truck/buggy.
if you are gonna race later buy a basic T3 and slowley upgrade parts because most of the options on the FT T3 is just eye candy. get youre self a stock motor a speed controll learn how to drive....well... and then go and buy youreself parts that will help youre racing ability. remember this hobby does not have to be expensive unless you want it to be!! :D ;)

dude im not trying to push him into getting a ft or team kit.i was just suggesting it,because i know how overwhelming it can be when you first get into rc.i just did and it has cost me alot of money, and because the cost of these can be quite high (especially for a 14 year old kid who just started racing last month.)so get like a rtr and when you progress as time goes on then buy the you need to improve your racing abitlity as warhawk said.

Since you are starting out I'd reccomend something like a Team GT, XXXNT, (both if you want to try nitro) Team T3, XXXT, Team TC3, B3, or XXX (depending on which class you want to race in). If you go AE I'd reccomend you get a Team so you have a few vital hop-ups like bearings along with some nice pieces like teflon coated shocks and CVDs.
Since you are a newbie I would say DO NOT get a RTR. I've had a few friends get RTRs when I got kits and they didn't know jack about how the car worked or how to fix it. It took me showing them how to get it fixed. You learn way more from building it from a kit over buying a RTR.

I do think that you should start with electric, but something you can build. You SHOULD make your self comfortable in building an RC car.

Go for a Traxxas Rustler! That truck is tough as nails and should hold up against the crashes while you get the hang of it. I owned 2 of them when I first started, now I wish I didn't sell them :/

or Traxxas Stampede (monster truck) RTR with esc, IMHO.
that's my first real RC. it's also a tough very durable will go anywhere truck.
It has many hopups options for you later on, even for 4WD, etc.
I now run it with 7 cell 3000 mah hump pack battery (by Duratrax), 17T matrix (integy) and Duratrax Blast esc, it has between 15 to 20 minutes run time!

Ok, to add my .02 to this.
First, if you want to race, find out what everyone else is racing. If there are tons of buggies and trucks, pick what you like.
Second, start with a basic kit, but get a KIT, not a RTR. The experience (and frustration) you'll get from building the car yourself will be well worth it.
Third, Talk to the people at your local track, find out what they use and like; and what they don't.
This can be a SUPER expensive hobby if you let it be, but by picking the right things to buy at the right times you can do very well without breaking the bank.

I too would have to say a Rustler or Stampede! Those things are SOOOOOOO durable, i have had tons of harsh landings on cement with my rustler and all it has done to it is scratched the chassis and body! :D
Also they are very inexpensive rtr trucks so then u will have more money to spend on hop-ups like a good esc, bearings, better motor, better battery packs, ect..... :D
