What's the best way to set the pinion to spur mesh? I set mine to tight aparently and wasted a pinion. Do you just judge by looking at it or what?

thanks.

I used to use a piece of paper between the pinion and spur, but now I just eye-ball it. If you can rock the spur gear back and forth a bit, that's about right.

How's your sense of feel? Really besides the paper method sense of feel can help alot. After setting the mesh between the spur and pinion try rotating the spur with your thumb or finger. There will be slight differences in the feel from hard resistance to slight resistance, very loose or little resistance the teeth are too far or apart.

So what I do is set the spur and pinion as tight as possible then adjust by loosening the motor and backing off in small amounts checking the feel or resistance.

Some spur gears (stock ones especially  ) are not completely round, so remember to rotate your spur 360 degrees after you're done tightening down the motor to make sure your pinion doesn't bind at ANY point on the spur.

Go to the track and get someone to show you how the gear mesh is suppose to feel!

WEC777, very good tip!

I usually set it so that I have the least play possible between the pinion and the spur, without having no play.

The paper method is great, but I just eyeball it now, it should be where there is maybe 1/2 mm of play in the gears.
