I would like to buy a boat for my Dad to use with the grandkids on a small lake. It is a little overwhelming to try to pick one out so I am hoping you all can help me. What boat is the best value with regards to speed, distance, battery life, etc.? I don't want a putt-putt, but I also realize that I won't get any racers in this price range! Also, any brands to avoid? Thanks for your help! :)

The CEN Aqua Jet is also a good choice http://cenracing.com/boats/aqua.html

The Zig-Zag Racers are a blast for the price, usually just under $80.00 ready to run with everything needed included. The charger is slow though. It will run in the 12-15 MPH range, a lot faster then other Department store brands and you can easily get parts for them.

That's the sort of question that really doesn't have just one answer, and, that answer depends on the person doing the 'looking'. What does it matter if it's the absolute-best-buy on the market if you (or who ever) doesn't like the boat? If 'you' are looking for the absolute-best-value for 'you, then whichever boat 'you' like the best is the 'best value'.
Does your dad have an interest in sailing? If yes, then have ~him~ pick the boat he like the best. If not, then don't waste his/your time/money...

I would go with the AquaCraft Hammer EP. Best bang for the buck in that range.

Although the Aqua Jet is a little faster (and has a surface drive)

The reason why I mentioned the ZZR or other ones in this price range is because they come complete for the money. With the other boats you'll have to buy battery packs and chargers so you're looking at a lot more cash, more than the $150.00 that he wants to spend.

WOW!!.Thats the worst boat I have seen!!.

Wow! That's really fast for a nikko! My first boat (a nikko sea hawk) would do about 20 (when I threw it into the water hard to get a little speed), and would slow down to a pace so slow that when I walked slowly on shore, it couldn't keep up (about 2mph - I measured it). Those boats are crap, plain and simple.
