ugh, paypal. Ummm insert lots of explicitives before the word paypal. I sold a bunch o stuff on ebay, had 6,000 in the paypal account and they decided I needed to "verify" myself. Such antics included sending them my passport, and trying to prove I was at an address I wasn't at. Despite my pleading that I was no longer at that address and thus could not prove it to be mine, they locked up my funds for 6 months and banned me.
I asked what rule I had violated in the user agreement and they couldn't tell me, however they could keep my money.
I know its a handy way to pay for things, just beware. I'm not the only one with a tale like this.

That is what
www.paypalwarning.com
is for.
Your not alone, since they are not a true bank they can make up there own rules and do whatever they please to a certain extent.
Paypal only protects themselves, number one then the buyer comes in at number two,
and geez I don't know where the seller comes into play on this. I have lost thousands with paypal in 2000, so I'm not a very big fan of them.

I don't keep any money in my PayPal account. If I need to pay for something via PayPal, it's taken from my checking account. When I receive payment for something, it immediately goes into my checking account. At any given time, there's not more than $50 or so in my PayPal account.
Heck, maybe even having it linked to my checking account is a bad idea...

Me too, I only put money in my paypal account right before I buy something. If there is a balance in my account I transfer it out to a bank account.

^^^Kudos to hobbyguyrc - I'm waiting for another order from him right now. ALways been first rate to deal with with competitive prices - may not be lowest, but he sure won't be anywhere near highest either.
PayPal - you have to have it linked to your bank acct to get certified status, this helps make sellers or buyers comfortable with your transaction - they know they're dealing with a real person with a real address. I keep my acct empty also and I over ride the source of funds on purchases and use my credit card. My credit card company has saved me on 2 bad transactions.

Yup, its not too good an idea regarding ebay having access to your regular/bill paying checking account.
One of my buddies let paypal have access to his account. I can't remember exactly what happened but paypal withdrew something like 500 bucks from his checking account. He had a few checks bounce. He dealt with paypal, and it eventually got taken care of but that was a few months later.
Personally, I do let paypal have access to my checking account, but I set-up a special checking account with my bank. It never has more than 5 bucks in it. If I sell a bunch on ebay, I'll have them deposit it to my checking account then, I'll move the money.
As stated above, paypal is not a bank or FDIC insured banking type business, its a regular business that is not insured.....

I was chasing a HB LP1 roller that was selling on ebay and I sent the money after I won the auction but he did'nt send the roller. I refused to pay that part of my credit card bill and let them know everything I knew about the seller. Within 3 weeks, the credit card had that one cleared up, seller refunded the credit card company their money. When his parents found out what he was up too, the money was returned. I never did get that roller - I bought one from the FS forum here.
The other was similar but was an internet purchase. I run a small business that consumes a lot of ink producing specialized prints. I use epson printers (5 different ones) and finally was referred to a non-epson ink seller by a friend who had bought from her before without problems and her ink cartridges worked as well as Epson's at 1/4 the price.
I bought a years supply of ink (few thousand dollars) via PayPal (credit card) and the seller acknowledged the purchase by return email and nothing further happened. She took the money and moved to China. She said she thought she had shipped the ink before she left, but had no receipts to prove she shipped anything (I don't believe her story, sick parents, had to move back home to care for them). It took the credit card 4 months to clear that one up and recoup their money. I had to look at a disputed charge on my bill for 4 months, but I was never out any money.
Believe me, a major credit card can and will lean harder on someone than I ever could especially someone who is a long way away.
