If I add heavier brush springs to my moter will it increase torque? If so do I add heavier springs to both sides or just one side?

NO, that it not the ideal way of tuning. You want only enough spring tension to keep brush in contact with the comm which can vary depending on what the motor is used for anything from a red/green, 2 reds, purple/red to 2 purples. Gearing is used to tailor the motors power to track layout or conditions. Brush compounds can also change motor power instead of high silver - which tend to produce higher levels of power and medium or low silver may produce lower rpms and slightly higher torque when used with certain spring combo and gearing.

Yes most use the positive side for heavier spring or higher silver brush but sometime reversing it also works.
Gearing tends to be the key factor that's often over looked not just a specific motor or spring tension.
