Hi there,

I made a custom R.C. car using a chain saw engine and thing is totally insaine. It rips the tires loose on pavement.

I would love to hear from someone interested in my project since I feel like I'm the only one who ever attempted such a thing. I'd be glad to help some build their own as well. I have a bunch of pictures and some video clips of the car at this web site address. The video clips are old though since the new version of the car is 4 times better. (updated video to come)

HeJJ yeah !
That is what I am talking about !

Seems ludicrous fast. I haven't read the whole thing yet, but the videos are great.
Are you considering suspension enhancements ?

Thats a pretty cool project RC you have there. What servo did you use to turn those big wheels? I did think about making a 1/5th - 1/4th scale RC and putting a 50cc 5spd water cooled dirt bike engine in it. I had it all designed in auto cad and I was ready to buid it. But I wanted to wait and buy a MIG welder so I could make a strong tube frame. Also, I wanted to put full double wish bone suspension on it with coil over shocks. The only reason I didnt finish this plan was cost. I was only 16 at the time, and I couldnt make enough mowing lawns to build this and buy an $1,800.00 welder. And I was to busy with school to get a job. Anyway, thats pretty cool.. Post more pics and movies of it. Also, can you use windows media player format? I HATE quick time!

The rear tires are USA1 since they seemed a little stiffer.

Suspension enhancemets are possible. The problem I'm having is that the car is almost 20lbs and I would need to find some serious suspension parts.

It actually handles pretty well due to the nice squishy tires and it's main purpose in life was to be uncomplicated and indestructable (also cost effective).

Thanks for the feedback - I'll have to put up some new video clips since that's actually the old car. The new car is much, much better mainly due to the jackshaft (lower gearing). A little less top end but it could pull my lawnmower out of the ditch.

The servo is a Hitec (1/4 scale) that has metal gears and puts out 130oz/in of torque.($40.00) I have two servo saving devices to protect it also. No major problems so far and as long as your moving a little it turns fine.

That's a cool buggy. About how long did it take to build?

That buggy is AWESOME!! :D

It reminds me of my old 1/8 gas buggy, but so much bigger and better.

Dude, I would buy that in a heartbeat!

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the feedback. The car took about a year to build but since I'm married with kids and working 40 hours a week I didn't spend all that much time on it every week. My cousin built a Chainsaw powered car too and his was completed in less than a month -but mine is better :D

The motor is off a 1976 Homelite chainsaw of my dads. I think those older motors are built stronger than the ones today and after I put new rings on it the compression seemed great.

Nice car!
How fast does it go?

I'm not very good at gauging speed and because it has a gear set from a mountain bike I would guess that you could gear it to go as fast as you want. I'm thinking 60MPH could be possible.

Right now I have it geared super low so that I can spin the tires on pavement and just throw dirt around....since the suspension is not as good as it could be I wouldn't trust it going too fast unless on road. I'm more into low-end torque, wheelies and fast take-offs.

Were you able to do brakes? And where bid you get the wheel bearings?

That car is sweet. You could mabye use 1/4 scale car shocks on it. Those shocks are kind of pricey though :(

I got the wheel bearings from a local bearing shop here in Milwaukee (WI) for about $50.00 I think. They have some really nice and light plastic-like bearing blocks but they were over $100 so I went with the cast iron ones. (future upgrade maybe).

There are NO brakes on the car but it hasn't been a big deal so far as long as I stay away from trees and such.

Yes, I could find some 1/4 scale shocks but the real problem is getting all the rest of the suspension parts. I would have to have my dad custom machine everything and the risk of a crash bending/breaking everything is not worth it at this time.

cool!

Seems to be geared a bit high, but I like it. Now make it 4wd and put some coilovers on it.

Sweet. I've got a few old 30cc weedeaters and I've been thinking the same thing.

The video clips are the old version of the car. The new version (the modified pictures) have a jack-shaft added and it's geared way down. (much better)

I agree, in the clips it's bogging down a bit.

My current project is a boat powerd by an old weedeater motor. I'll be posting progress picrtures on my web site as the project comes along.
