I still have a pair of 3 piece rims. The tires stick to thoes things like glue! I believe they are kyosho rims.... About the rotating mass issue, you could use aluminum scres and or bolt. That would cut down on quite a bit over using steel screws! Im for 3 piece! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif

u know i think AC still makes 3 piece rims. i mean my T3 has them on the front wheels. it is a nice combo because i think the extra weight gives better handling

Main reason 3 peice rims arn't used is because they add weight to the car.

What ever happened to the 3-piece rims? I kind of wish they came back.
We currently slave over those tires, sanding them to make a nice surface and then carefully glueing them while trying to make sure they stay true (not wobbly). Some people call it "an art" to put a nice set of tires together.
I remember Proline used to have 3 piece rims few years ago. While I think the 3 piece rim is a great concept, the Proline's rims I tried were seriously flawed. Tires always slid off the rims, and plastic threads constantly stripped making it impossible to tighten the rims against the tires very well.
Racers also said "the rotating mass was more". I think thats why it might have faded out. Is this why or is there something more significant that I'm missing? A patent?
My original Tamiya Frog had 3 piece rims and it had no problems coming off. If Proline used Tamiya's design by making a slot on the outside and inside edge of the tire's glueing area, the 3 piece rims could fit into them and hold them tight, then they would not come off like they used to, no glueing. Tires would actually have to tear off. And putting nuts on the other end of the bolts like my Frog's rim would hold the rims together MUCH better instead of relying on plastic threads. The resulting tires would also have a better chance of being true. And the best benefit would be the ease of replacing tires, foam and/or rims without trashing the whole unit.
While I like art, I don't think putting together a set of tires should be one. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
