I was wondering if anyone knows of a 550 size modified high performance motor able to run on 6 cells. This is going to be used in a direct drive setup. All I could find were trinity's 550 motors made to run in the emaxx or the villain ex(14.4 volts). These may work in the 7.2 volt application but I'm not sure. Also, will a 540 size motor bolt in right where a 550 size would go? I would like to hear any comments, suggestions anyone might have. thanks

what kind of hull are you trying to run it in? i have several 6 cell trinity's. i've got 6 turn, 13 turn and 15 turn motors that are all meant for 6 cell use. well...the 6 is better for 4 cells, but that's beside the point. a low turn motor that works well in a 'rigger will probably never get a mono on plane. and a lower turn motor that will run a mono might be slow in a hydro. give a little more info and we can point you in the right direction. to assist your shopping, check out tower hobbies. look at the trinity and reedy motors.

The hull this motor is going in is a 23 inch mono

i'm building a 22" mono myself. i plan on starting with a 15x2 motor and going from there. i like the P-94's from Epic and Trinity. my epic 13turn pushed my rigger pretty hard but i don't know how it would do in a mono. this will be my first FE mono by the way. the advice that i've been given from the pro's is to not run for more than 50-60 seconds at a time when first testing. make sure you take the temp's of the batt. ESC and motor after each run. i use the Duratrax infrared temp gauge. it's also good to have a selection of props available. if you haven't bought a drive shaft yet...go with wire drive!!! it will free up some RPM and let your motor run better IMHO.

The 540s will bolt right in place of a 550. The sealed-can 550 motors are lower performance than the typical 05 (540) motor like Boatdoc is using; they are cheaper and don't require any real maintanance other than keepng them dry and oiling the bushings. But they produce less power and are usually not as fast. For your 23" mono you might want to consider the various 27-turn stock motors. They are faster than most 550s, are relatively cheap, and relatively low maintenance. A slightly faster motor is the 19-turn spec motor from Trinity and Reedy.

The higher performance 05 mod motors come in a wide variety of power levels suitable for 6 cells, but you must match the motor to the boat, ESC and cells. A big mistake is to choose too powerful a motor because you think it will make the boat go 40 mph - it won't, it will burn up the motor, and perhaps the ESC and cells too. BTW, the fastest 6-cell monos go 30-35 mph tops, and it takes special hulls to do it, not a kit "box art boat". ;)

Thanks everyone, all of your suggestions are helpful. I was also wondering if a Graupner speed 600 motor would be a good choice-I've heard it is, and will it bolt on the 550/540 size motor mount?

I have a tsunami from radio shack that has a 27 turn motor and I would love to put my 14turn trinity onyx in it but I think the esc cant handle the motor ,but I do have a mag mayhem 22 turn motor that will work i think.I get about 5 min runtime right now and I know that will go down with the mag in there.
