Hi! I'm relatively new to the R/C car scene, and I found the advertisement for the Pro-Line/RCCA Cactus Classic while browsing through the latest issue of RCCA. I was wondering if anybody had any more information on this event. I'm considering on going, since I live in the area. It'll be my first R/C race! Here are some of my questions:
1. Can a relatively stock Traxxas Rustler compete? (The only hop-ups are a new front bumper, and Chevron tread front tires)
2. Would I have to go get a new motor and an ESC to compete? Right now it's got the standard 20-turn Traxxas Stinger motor and an MSC.
3. What's a 24-degree motor? Is 'degree' the same as 'turn'?
4. Will I have to attend Friday qualifying?
That's it! Thanks for your time.

So, you finally decided to race. Well, the stock motor that comes with the Rustler is an O.K. motor. An after market motor has a lot more punch and is very torquey(sp). As far as an ESC, a cheap sportman ESC will do just fine. If you buy a new stock motor whatever you have in it right know is fine, but you comprimise a lot of performance. 24-degrees on a motor means that the timing has been advanced, similar on a car's distributor. It simply means faster RPM's and more torque, retarded timing means the exact oppisite. As long as I have raced, you always attend Fridays qualifying, to look at the other racers and to find the quickest way around the track. But, with a P2K Stock($23), Novak Daully($86), and a set of pinions you should be alright. Oh and don't me intimadated by the other racers with Associated's and Losi's. You're there to have and win. http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/cool.gif

I imagine the Cactus Classic will be run by ROAR rules, so you'll have to get a ROAR-legal stock motor (24 degree) like a P2K, GM3, or whatever you want. FYI, 24 degree stock motors have 27 turns of wire, and that gives them loads of torque. You Rustler can probably compete if you can drive it well, but one thing's for sure, those Chevron ties are not going to work well enough on the track. You need to find out what tires will hook up on its surface and get some, otherwise you'll be fighting for traction all weekend, and you won't be getting jack squat with those chevrons. If you're lucky, your Rustler's stock tires might work well enough, if they're not bald. As far as Friday qualifying goes, you can take as much practice you can get, so I'd go for it if you can.

"24-degrees on a motor means that the timing has been advanced, similar on a car's distributor."
So saying 24-degrees is like saying 24 turns? Or is it something different?
"Oh and don't me intimadated by the other racers with Associated's and Losi's."
I was wondering those guys all race nothing but Losi's and AE's anyway? http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif What's wrong with the good ol' Traxxas RTRs? http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
"FYI, 24 degree stock motors have 7 turns of wire, and that gives them loads of torque."
7 turns? I thought they had 27. I guess that Trinity P2k is really worth that $23 now! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
"You Rustler can probably compete if you can drive it well"
Well, I don't crash that often http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
"but one thing's for sure, those Chevron ties are not going to work well enough on the track."
Huh? My Chevrons hook up extremely well to loose dirt and gravel. Maybe then again, they're not Chevrons. I don't know exactly what they are, I just know they have V-style tread, and they are only on the front.
"If you're lucky, your Rustler's stock tires might work well enough, if they're not bald."
Well, my front ribs are sitting in my pit box, and my rear tires are bald right down the center. Doh! Shouldn't have drove it on the street http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif
"As far as Friday qualifying goes, you can take as much practice you can get, so I'd go for it if you can."
I'm going to try to make it, but with school I dunno.
Thanks for all your help, guys!

Well, that "7 turns" comment was an obvious typing error. The fact is that ROAR legal stock motors have 27 turns of wire, and they have 24 degrees of timing. Degrees of timing on an electric motor is basically the angle at hich the brushes are (when looking at the top of the endbell) in relation to the magnets inside the can. That is the simplified technical explanation.
About the tires, you'll surely get better traction on the track you'll be racing if you find out from racers what will hook up. Look on their trucks, I guarantee that they won't be running chevrons.

Yeah, I notice they don't run Chevrons, but what's wrong with being a little different? http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif No really, I try and find out what other guys are running on this track. Anybody raced on Scottsdale R/C Mania in AZ?

Schweet! Hopefully I can make it, just look for the bland red truck with Traxxas logos on the sides and the hood. That me! I don't have many extra parts int my pit box. Guess I'd better stock up! http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif I probably be further back in the field than you http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif It'd be my first race, and I'm pretty excited! I might drop a few bucks and get a new body, too, so I don't look like I'm new http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Maybe an Associated or Losi body with the matching decals. Make it look like a pro truck http://www.rccaraction.com/ubb/smile.gif Hope I'll see you out there, man!

Who knows you might be better then what you think.

Just look for the Losi thats kind neon purple with neon yellow drops on the front to match my rims. Im hyped up can you tell?
Might not win or even come close to the winners but im sure gonna have some fun.
You can take the Truck out of the Race but you cant take the Race out of the Truck
